MOT for Historic mk1

Hi All

I've applied for historic tax and waiting for V5 to come back, and am aware the car does not need an MOT now.

However, I will continue to MOT it once a year to be sure it is safe.
How does it work in practice?

Do I just book it in for a normal MOT?
What if it fails? What happens then?

Can't find any info on how it works in practice.
Any pointers?

I spoke to my MOT guy a couple of years ago, he said it's your responsibility to ensure the car is roadworthy so if it fails you officially know that it isn't.
As you say, worth doing to know it's safe, and not fall foul of law or worse, the insurance in case of an incident

That's not an official answer, just a chat at the garage so if someone knows more then I'd be interested too

Even though our cars are not required to have an MOT, it is always a good idea to have a regualr third party inspection no matter how meticulous we may be in the vehicle's upkeep. It has often struck me how easy it would be for our insurance cover to be denied if we could not demonstrate the vehicle was roadworthy.

Cheers guys. I'm just going to book it in an see what happens. The guy I go to is a reasonable chap and I have been using him for years. He is just away on hols at the mo so I can't pop in and ask.

Did this to my'83 Cab the other week. Post Office and DVLA were very helpful. The P.O. taxed it for me there and then no fuss.
As far as submitting your car for an MOT, which could result in a failure for a very minor infringement (which makes the  car unroadworthy and also could incur a retest cost). Just take it to your local garage ask them to put it up on the ramp and do an inspection. And if work needs to be done and as long as it does not affect the road safety of the vehicle i.e minor faults. can be carried out by yourself with out the stress of meeting an MOT deadline.   

I tried to do change the log book on my 83 golf to historic tax before i retuned to work, i took the log book to the post office with the V112 for mot exempt, they sent everything off to the DVLA, who have just returned everything in the post and said i need to fill in a V10 and send that off with my V5 log book again when i reapply.

I cant do anything till August when i am home, but i hope they are not trying to make me pay road tax. or do i put historic on the V10 when i apply again?

On the face of it I can see no reason why you weren't granted 'historic' status.

Grasping at straws… Did you mark your car as catagory 'R' on the V112?

Not saying it's the case here, but DVLA aren't renown for always getting things right.

Seems to very much depend on who looks at your application.

I'm not long after spending 6 months trying to get an engine change approved (along with historic status) and the catalogue of errors they made was incredible.

Word to the wise… photograph / record every thing and avoid sending original documents if at all possible.
