Mk1 Golf Cabriolet 1991 cluster main PCB
I have a MK1 Golf Cabriolet 1991 left hand drive 1.8 Injector H2 engine.
The MFA on the cluster has never worked in the 12 years of owning the car, so i thought i would have a go at replacing the LCD. Once i had stripped it all down removed the Large PCB i noticed three Resistors have blown.
I have searched the internet for any information on this with no luck, can anyone tell me what size resistors they are supposed to be, looking at them it looks like three different sizes.
Any information would be helpful.

If they got that hot then they may have taken out the Cap at the end….but well I used to work on a Display that was led based and the resistors would harden… To find the iffy ones we placed a small flat blade under them and barely tweak it.. If it broke in half, then it was a flaky one.
And we all know how accurate VW schematics are for these types of things.

Thanks Briano not sure what i am looking at on the pics u sent i was staring at things like that all day yesterday on the net and to be honest couldnt make any sense of them.
VW didn't post the values of the components, only shows them as squares and solid state components…
No one can make sense out of all of them pictures…They defy logic…. It only took me about 5 - 6 years to figure out the mistakes, and well
40 years of reading them.

I have just found the same PCB on crazyquiffs Facebook page any idea on the resistors I have circled.

The middle one appears to be a 190ohm 1/4 watt resistor.

the top one bzx something ?
the bottom one a pin diode.
i have got a guy who messes with PCB's having a look at it tomorrow, if that fails the guy who i got the picture from (crazyquiffs) sells the board.

Brown 1
White 9
Black 0
And I made a mistook…. 19 ohms.
Which isn't to say that it couldn't be orange and then the value would be 39 Ohms.
Which is 19 Ohms.
Diodes aren't usually referred to as PIN diodes, a diode is a one way electrical switch with by the junction of the
p/n material and the direction allows current to flow in the direction from the black or white band on the material as the negative side of the diode or which way it is oriented in the Circuit. as current flows normally from the negative side to the positive side, that when the negative side doesn't have sufficient biasing to open it impedes the flow of electrons or current in the device.
In a Normal circuit, the band points to the negative side of the diode or the n junction between the p and the n
(Positive/Negative ).
And the Negative side of the diode is usually tied via a resistor to ground….but not always.
The usual names I have seen over the years are:
Zener,
Gunn,
Schockley
Schottkey
never seen a reference to PIn…
A transistor (oldie school) is basically 2 diodes back to back in the same case. Arrow, dot, or Band points to the most negative end.
I know a little bit about this.

Briano1234 … re the MPG setting and the 99.9 reading, do you know anything about that?? It has bugged owners for years and no one has ever got to the bottom of how to rectify it!!
Mine went from working to 99.9 after an engine rebuild - totally out, rebuilt and put back. Everything else is working on the MFA, all pipes are connected properly too.
I took it to pieces a few weeks ago but it didn't change anything. I've pulled the No.3 fuse and left the battery disconnected over night, again no change still 99.9
Any ideas please???
