Cheap Mk1 i just couldn't say no to.

That hole in the fuel tank's a bit alarming, wonder how much fuel you've lost over the years through that!

Yeh, have only ever been able to put £20 in before the smell of petrol seeped out. To be fair it wasn't that bad until i attached it with the angle grinder

Todays small amount of progress…

Fuel filler neck rust painted

Stone chipped

Rust repairs… Thats the floorpan edge and inner sill finished, got the middle sill part at the rear to fabricate and weld in then it should be pretty much ready for the new sill.

Seat belt mount welded back in

All painted

Fuel tank hole welded up and will be sealed inside and out later

Then i noticed another hole in a fairly common place, so welded that up too

Thats all until my next couple of days off work next week..

Excellent work on the inner arch/fuel pipe bit. That's a real pain in the backside to do and get right!

What size tin of the POR15 tank sealant did you buy?

I'm looking at some now but it gives me 3 options 236ml, 473ml and 946ml and I've no idea how much I need.

What an awesome project, just read the 4 pages and love it! not normal 1 for ratty cars, but love the black and red, reminds me of my friends old mk1 from years back when we loved our old vws and it was a lot more fun back then! Hats off to you for cracking on and doing all that work, and your old beetle looked pretty sweet

236ml, fair bit of prep goes into it, you need POR15s marine cleaner and metal ready. poor prep will lead to the paint pealing and blocking fuel lines.

Thanks all for the kind comments. I really like the black with red but I'm considering a colour change, matte black is just too common.

Thanks :), I'll look into it. Didn't know you could get anything like it until I saw this, seems like a good idea.

Haven't updated this in a while so here it is, been cracking on with it when the weather allows me to.

Had to make up lots of extra bits as the rust extended beyond the sill repair panel…

Onto the fuel filler

Had to make up my own repair for the inner arch part…

Quick skim of filler to stop the rain getting at it

Thats it up to date as of this evening…

That brings back some memories, all the repairs I've just done on mine!

Tidy work, did you get much distortion on the rear quarter after doing the filler neck outer panel? I've done mine twice and it's still not great so leaving that for the body shop to sort

Yeh, small amount of distortion, welded really slow and it was going fine, right up until the back of the weld caught fire and i couldn't put it out very quickly. I think that caused a bit of distortion coz the panel was really hot after. Nothing that won't pop out with the right tools…

That doesn't sound too bad then. It doesn't seem to matter how careful you are, it's such a flexible panel it's gonna go!

Look forward to your updates ;)
