It has already had a previous repair, although not a very good one!
Area marked to be cut out

And cut out

New plate welded in

Both sides were fully welded

Then a coat of primer

I need to invest in a small 50mm sander soon so that i can sand in all the fiddly places where my 4" angle grinder cant get to!
The repair plate is quite a bit thicker than the original metal so should be very strong.

Looks good Jimi. I think nearly all remaining MK1's have had this done.![]()
seems to be one of the many common issues.

Hi Jimi. Some top fabrication skills going on here, love see photos of metalwork getting restored. Good luck with the restoration. Matt.
Thanks Matt, it is actually quite enjoyable doing the metal work, better than scrapping off the dreaded underseal anyway.

Cheers Andy, I have been following your build aswell and it is looking good, both in the same boat.

I am trying to get the metalwork done asap so it can go off to paint. I want to be getting it bolted back together so I can use it this summer. Everything seems to take so long, but it needs to be done properly

Here are some pics showing what was hidind behind the outer sill.

Plenty of rot/rust, much worse than the n/s
Areas cut out!

Plate cut out and tacked into place.

This is a repair I did where the fuel tank would sit.

More work on the inner sill

Plates welded in

A quick coat of primer, ready for the next piece to go over the top

More repair plates made and tacked into position!

Fully welded and primered

The repairs to the inner sill have taken me longer than expected. In some places, up to 4 panels come together, and these all needed to be cut back and repaired.
I have also nearly finished fettling the outer sill so will get this fitted one night in the week.
I went to ultimate dubs last sunday and am completly inspired by the 1st class mk 1's that were on show!
