My budget realy depends on whats on offer, i dont really have a set budget that I have to stick to. I would like to see whats on offer for what money and if I feel its worth my hard earned money then I will part with it.
Id like a black non sunroof model with lowish miles and good history.
The car will be used for shows only, this would free up my series 2 to be driven more regularly.
I hope this makes sence.
Regards
Chris

If parts are missing, which the likelihood will be, then you will pay through the nose to locate and restore those missing items. Early stuff is really climbing in price. I look back and laugh at all the swallowtails I bought for £150 each years back. I could have retired on the proceeds if I'd kept hold of them all. The biggest differences are I within the cabin. Seats, door panels, dash etc. are all hard to track and expensive to buy.
If you want one that's already done, then again, I'd expect to pay 5 figures now. They really are going to be a breed apart from the s2's in their value. The original s1 GTI and the s2 campaign GTI will soar in price, as they are the models in demand.

Yes, except S2 Campaigns are in less demand and much more available than S1 GTis.
And when you delve into S1 GTis, you find the 76-77 models are super rare. There is a group of us with only 18 members worldwide!
Christ I didn't think they were that rare.

click the years button and scroll through. You can see Rajan's '76 is SORN'd!
Have a look here, and consider that the majority will be requiring restoration work. Plus, the numbers may be slightly corrupt for cars that have been stored for years and owners haven't bothered declaring them, or worse, owners have kept the log book and vin plate, but the car is dead.

To save you adding the SORNs/licensed for Mk1 GTis:
1983 = 1,817 (mostly campaigns)
1982 = 516
1981 = 237
1980 = 49
1979 = 43
1978 = 2
1977 = 0
1976 = 1
Actually the numbers are 1 out - I have not registered my 77 GTi!
One of the 78s is mine, the other is a shell at the moment as I know the owner.

Shows that the campaign is the most common Mk1 hatchback remaining by quite a large margin.

I think you should just enjoy your mint golf ( bet it drives a lot better than a series 1)
Just be patient and see what comes up.
