Accelerator cable and pedal fitting (or not!)

Post

The cable on our '87 cab keeps popping out from the pedal. Can't find a diagram or pic to see what it should look like so here's ours

Is it on the wrong side, needs to be bent in more or missing something all together?

yep..you`re missing the rubber grommet thingy that pops into the circular hole in the pedal, then the cable goes through that….same thing happened to mine….check this post..

and make sure the cable isnt too tight once the rubber is replaced, set it so the throttle is just wide open when pedal is to the floor. otherwise you'll bend the cable/pedal and distort your new rubber

Thanks for the help guys and the link. 86p for the mk2 was a nice little saving

Ok so new rubber went in (cheaper mk2 item) tapered end on the left and cable passing from right to left but still popped out twice on a short journey. Have I got either in back to front?

think I read on the `link` thread that people have used a large carpet washer over the end of the cable to spread the load to stop it pulling back through..and check that the cable isn't too tight.

I have done that and it works a treat

check that the end of the cable isnt bent, it should have a nice 90degree bend on it. also look up into the footwell to make sure that the accellerator pedal arm is square with the hole in the bulkhead so that when you push the pedal the cable is being pulled straight thru the hole and not at an angle. the arm is easy to bend!

finally check the cable tension, the throttle should just be wide open when the pedal is too the floor. if its too tight it'll cause all of the above problems and make the cable pop out all the time
