Been asked loads. No - just fit the whole engine!

Is that no it's impossible or no it's easier to fit the whole thing?

Its not impossible but here's an example:

The 8V oil breather is on the cam cover
The 16V oil breather is on the block

So if you put the 16V head onto the 8V block, you'd have NO oil breather.

Another:

The 16V block has oil squirters which squirt oil to the base of the pistons, due to it needing extra cooling, due to it being more powerful.

And another:

The 16V pistons are a different shape, to accommodate the 4 valves per cylinder.

So you could probably USE an 8V block, but by the time you've adapted it to 16V spec, you'd have spent around ?800-1000 on it. And yes, it would need to come out the car, etc. See why you might as well start with the whole engine?

volkswagen did develop a 16v head that went straight onto the 8v block for use in something, can't remember what.  Think it might have been Passat.  Don't know if it even made it into production.

I might, it depends on the weather and whether I can get out of bed!

On the subject of more power, I wouldn't mind, it's already a 2ltr and puts out 135bhp, lots of torque though, there isn't much more I can do without shelling out loads, maybe a tubular manifold would squeeze out a few more ponies.
