How i got rid of my 1980's glass sunroof ............

Having just painted my 1983 Gti i was going to put back that horrible 80's sunroof that so many cars were fitted with BUT …Decided to do this

First rip out and throw away the old Piranna roof [if any one needs it or bits from it drop me a PM]

Find a suitable donor car who will supply you with a roof you rearly want

Then buy it  complete for ?50.00

Inspect the old hole and take the plunge to chop out more metal

Take some very carefull measurements , check about 3 times and chop away

To be continued …………..

Finished at last !

I am very pleased with the "NEW" roof its different and looks much better than the glass after market 1980's item

Firstly i had the inner roof headlining made up by my local curtain maker for ?20.00 , its good as well .

Used good old Evo Stick on the inner trim parts

Next fitted the inner frame this stiffens the roof and is stronger that the original supports

Simple task of fitting the complete roof in its new hole [took about 6 hours all in]

And finally this is the new headlining

Stacks more fitting up to do now but the "New roof" looks very nice and i have no regrets , besides it looks much better in my Golf than it did in that Fiat .

Cheers………..

What those little thin bits of tin stuck on the roof lining ?

Steve they only serve to keep the roof skin from flexing and are little bits of bent tin stuck in the roof lining and mig welded at each end . The new roof gives the shell a lot more strength with the girder supplied bolted in side . The Golf roof gets its strength from the side beams above the door thats why the Cabriolet has girders fitted in its sills and beams under the dash .

When you think about it all factory sunroof models have the same set up , and besides its tons better than that after market glass effort i threw out .

Cheers ……………

great thread just wondering if u can remember all those years ago lol did it need much doing round the edge where the seal sits or was it just straight on to the roof skin?
