Electric window conversion :)

Hi guys, I have just completed an electric window conversion. Using alfa 147 window motors and mk 2 loom and switches :)

It works brilliantly and I will do a  write up soon.

I have mounted the switches where the ash tray would be it looks quite factory as well.

All for the princy sum of about 20 pounds :)

Yey!!

Good man, I'll look forward to the write-up & parts list.
Sounds like lots of people will be well interested.

Ok I'm going to try and do a write up for my budget electric window conversion. As said I used a lfa 147 motors, but I should think any which work on the worm gear type mech will work.

I managed to get a set for 12 pounds delivered from ebay :) God bless ebay.

1.Take the window seals out, door card out you should all know how to do this?

2. You have to undo the 2 10mm bolts on the regulator and slide the window out from the door. Also you need to drill the pop rivets out holding the metal divider. There are 2 pop rivets holding this one near the window winder and one on the bottom of the door, drill these out.
You can remove the black divder by twisting it 908 and carefully taking it out upwards.

3.Remove the winder mechanism, there are 4 10mm bolts IIRC, 2 holding the winder one on the door bottom and one nr the middle of the door. After removing these you can wriggle and manouver the winder out.

4. You will now have to drill the old winder mech off

5.There are two locating notches, file these smooth.

6. The alfa motors are cold rivited together, these need drilling there are about 5. Simply drill the tops off the then drive them out using a punch.

7. The holes where the rivets need drilling out if you are going to use self tapping bolts like me. If you can use small bolts then you couls do that also. So I had to drill the holes out with a 6mm drill bit

8.I chose to extend the cut out section so using a jnr hacksaw just cut an extra 5mm form either side, bend up and cut off. File off any excess to make it smooth.

9.Now line your motor up, the cog needs to be in the center of the cut out section. (Making the cut out bigger will make this also simpler).  The motor wants to sit il line with the rst of the winder mech, although there is alot of flex so being a tad out will not matter.

I put a bolt in just to line it up ;).

10. Put a tack either end with a welder, you need to do this I'm afraid!

11. Thats all the mechanical part complete. Wiring now, now don't quote me on this because I sm not an auto electrcian. I ahve heard you need to use a relay due to the high current needed, so far mine have been ok without. I just used the loom from a mk 2 and switches, I'll check colours and pt them on here to make it easier.

Basically…

I used a switched live off the fuse box straight to the switch loom and a neg onto the negative ring nxt to the box. I ran two wires to the motors and used the 3.5 spade connectors and basically connected them and tried them to see if I ahd them the right or wrong way round.

12. Put everything together, make sure you re rivet the divider and bolt all the winder in correctly, I wrapped the motors with rubber so they wouldnt rattle, but with some correct buffers you could bolt it in place.

Any questions just ask :) I thought it was super easy and took me a few hours to do both sides and wire it up.

Luke.
