I want to know more about my GTI!

I want to know more about my GTI!

I bought my '83 mars red GTI in May 2004. It came with hardly any history apart from a few reciepts, mot's back to 1997, and a photocopy of the last keepers V5 with the previous owners details.

I bought the car from a guy called Ashley from Aylesbury.

Before him it was owned by Tony Payne who ownes Payne's Body Shop in Iver near Slough (who apparently built Performance VW's rallye?) and he used it as his daily run around.

Apparently Tony Payne told the guy I bought the car from that one of the former owners was a tuning company so I wouldn't mind knowing if anything's been tweaked.

I'm gonna give Tony Payne a call to see if he can fill in any blanks but thought that I'd just see if anybody out there had any ideas.

Here are some images from before I got the car

Andy looks very nice for history you can do the following :

Much as it goes against the grain to reccommend giving money to the DVLA, it is very much worth your while to bung them a fiver attached to a letter asking for the full keeper history of your car. The DVLA  send you copies of all your car's old V5 ownership documents. Worth it just to see where its been and with who

Thanks Chudd!

I just spoke to the DVLA and you are right. I need to give a good reason why I want the information though.

I've got to send my name, address, car registration details, and a cheque or postal order into Fee Paying Enquiries, DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AJ

I'm sure others would be interested in doing this especially if their cars have had 9 owners like mine has. Should be interesting reading who the first owner was etc…

Andy, that's a real clean MK1 - nice alloys too - really suit!!

If you want to go way back you can e-mail VW germany and they can tell you date of manufacture etc.

This is the person who replied directly to me, although it wasn't the mail address I sent to first off.

extern.eckberth.von.witzleben@volkswagen.de

Let me know if you don't get any joy with this and I'll try to find another e-mail address although I'm sure it was something simple info@volkswagen.de?

VERY helpful,
Give your chassis number…..in a couple of days you will get a letter giving the date of manufacture.

If you still have the production plate, give me the number and I can work out the build date out for you.

Cheers
