'82 Golf GTi 16S (Oettinger)

Rajan,

This one is for you, courtesy of Ruediger Voelkner (MD) Oettinger Performance GmbH.

He asked me today if I would give you a key ring next time we meet. :D

He read the thread this morning.

Wow - I am speechless Danny!

That means so much to me  :D

Vielen Dank Herr Voelkner!

Tonight I swapped over the starter from my Lhasa GTi and she fired up first time. I had strange symptoms - the old starter tested OK out of the car when connected directly to the battery of my Vectra. Did the same on my fully charged 16S battery and the pin fired but the motor didn't turn. No voltage drop between starter and battery but the car would not jump start from the Vectra unless the 12V lead was connected directly to the starter terminal. Somehow the starter was drawing a huge current that the Vectra could cope with but the 16S battery could not.

Bad news is I still have a hot start problem despite changing injectors, WUR, pump, filter, fuel distributer, accumulator, check valve, cleaning out tank…

Will test fuel pressures again at the weekend, I am suspecting a 2nd dodgy check valve that came with the new pump. On a brighter note my brake pedal is now rock hard after bleeding the brakes - almost went through the windscreen! LHD brakes  8)

Now running full time with over 500 miles under the belt. Alas I still have a hot start problem despite testing the metering head too see where I am losing residual pressure. Apart from that she is running fine, this is a super revvy engine, with power right up to 7000 rpm. We really enjoyed the run up to UD  8)

Since the last update she has had:
- new VW starter motor
- accelerator cable and pedal bush
- 16V WUR
- new metering valve gasket set
- water pump and thermostat
- expansion tank
- gear linkage relay lever

Wow!…what a great Gti….I have never seen one of these in the metal..
When at school, I was never that interested in studying French, so my resourceful parents, bought me french car magazines to read.

I have a French GTi magazine from 07/82 where they test several standard and modified cars,,one is a white 16S with what appears to be a mild Zender kit on ATS cups?
I hope the restoration goes well, are you taking to many shows this year,,,it would be great to finally see a 16S.
cheers.

Probably the car you saw was a 16S with the standard BBS kit and ATS Cups.

Will be at a few shows, here is a pic from Spring Festival

Is there an Oettinger 8v engine or did they just make rocker covers for the 8v??

Oettinger tuned both the small and big block 8V engines. Yes there is a big block valve cover (I have one   )

The 16S was only available in 2 colours Alpine White and Black Metallic. Black Metallic was unique to this model (not to be confused with Anthracite Metallic found on the standard GTi).

hi raj, was just reading up on oettinger mk1's (just googled oettinger golf mk1) and it was saying they only came in two colours alpine white and anthracite grey LP9V, only 1250 were built to 16s spec only available in france and switzerland
