r1 or busa carbs

ok this is kinda following on from another thread i posted bout gettin more power from my driver…….

so i've decide i'm gonna start with the easy stuff first. someone mentioned in the previous thread about puttin r1 or busa carbs on so i wanna expand on what is needed to do this??

i'm not great with the internal workings of a carb and i've heard people mention re jetting what exactly is this and i'm assuming it would need doing so the carbs would suit my engine….. ontop of this is there anything else that would need doing?

any help appreciatted people!!!

I really think this is a bit of a waste of time as better results would be obtained by fitting larger engine. however it does seem a bit of an interesting project. As for the carbs i would have thought 1000 cc bike carbs may actually be too big, remember these bike engines rev far more than your 1300cc golf engine and therefore something from 6/700 cc may be more suitable. bogg brothers can probably knock you up a manifold if you dont have the facilities.as extra power comes from extra revs then yes i think your idea of getting the bottom end sorted is probably a good idea.

Hi,

I've no particular recommendations on the carbs but they may need rejetting to match your engine - basically the jet sizes allow the correct amount of fuel - you adjust the mixture accuratly when when you have the correct jets.  the jets for a 900 may be OK for an 1100 but will probably need bigger ones for a 1300.

You'll need an appropriate inlet manifold also, lingages, cable, air filters etc.

Easiest way to more power:

1. Sell your car
2. Buy a 1.8 GTI

Sorry, I think you're going to end up with either something not working, or something producing LESS power than you started with, or maybe a TINY bit more power but lumpy and difficult to live with day-to-day, after spending quite a bit more money than you orginally bargained for.

thanks for responses guys like i say i don't know a great deal bout carbs so all info is helpful….

abfmk1 how does the amount the bike engine rev have anything to do with it as i thought it would be about the fuel flow?

and paul_c can't afford insurance on a 1.8 as i have 9 points on licence  :roll:  so not an option for me i'm afraid and that also counts out an engine conversion. why do you think it would end up running worse?

and finally if not r1 or busa carbs what else could i use as finding a webber for mine looks like it would be nigh on impossible?

I could ask, why do you think it would run better? Adapting another carb from a distinctly different engine will always require its setting up. Also a bike carb is typically much simpler than the typical car carb, so lacks features which promote smoother running. If you fit multiple carbs, then your problems are multiplied. Any thoughts on how you'd balance the carbs? Basically, its all possible but it would probably need a carb specialist and a day or more at the rolling road - which would be costly.

If you're seeking to develop approx the same power as a GTI, insurance is going to cost approx the same as a GTI. Probably more, since its "modified" and not a standard or near-standard car. Whenever the fuel system is modified, insurers get nervous….

Carbs arent only about fuel flow ,they are also about airflow and too large an orifice means too slow an air speed. i agree with above and would also think a modified 1300 may well cost more than a standard larger engine to insure

paul_c what about a set of dellorto twin 40s? just seen a set on ebay that are on a 8v gti engine if re jetted would this fit mine also would the inlet manifold hes had made for the 8v fit mine?

also what features do car carbs have that promote smoother running?? just curious always good to know more rather than less

one last thing what kind of carb is standard for mine as it is stamped with both solex and pierburg????

i don't really want gti performance just fancy a little more power and something a bit different can't be any harm in that can there???

power basically comes from how much air you can get into the comustion chambers. this air needs the correct amount of fuel mixed with it and a correctly timed spark, to be efficient. unless you do some serious head and engine work, you are not going to need twin dhla's/dcoe's. you may be able uprate the carb with one from a 1.5/1.6/1.8 or polo gt (not sure of fitments on all these) which should be plenty more than enough.

 if you can't afford the insurance on a larger engined mk1, it's unlikely you will be able to afford the insurance on a 1.3 with the mods you plan on doing. unless, are you planning on telling the insurance company that it is standard? if so, you will be more or less, driving with no insurance. not advisable.

The MK1 Golf engine range does something like this:

1.1 ———— 45bhp
1.3 ———— 60bhp
1.5 ———— 70bhp
1.6 ———— 75bhp
1.8 ———— 90bhp
1.6i ———– 110bhp
1.8i ———– 112bhp

Why not just seek out a 1.5, or a 1.6 carb, if you can't afford a GTI?

i also have insurance problems..

what about a g40 conversion…

or polo gt.. easy wiring, low insurance as its a 1.3 and standard pushes out 75 hp.. 8)

dont know much about carbs or id help, my mates got r1 carbs on his 2.0 redtop and it sounds awesome..  8)

not much positive stuff too be said on this subject??? help me out people…. if none of the above is feasable what could i use as a good replacement as webbers seem impossible to find for mine. could i use a webber for a 1.5? really i just wanna know what is possible as i don't really have a clue.

at the mo the plans are too uprate front brakes servo and master cylinder, put a five speed box on, full exhaust system and change the carb mainly to get a better lookin engine bay and the carb thats on at the mo is lookin a bit worse for wear. i did think of doing internals but i've gone off that idea as it's gonna cost too much.

if you'd read my last post i'm basically now just askin what is a feasable replacement carb apart from a webber for my car as they are impossible to source? surely someone has an answer for this?

Your only real option for a 1.3 is a rebuild of your existing carb.  I do a rebuild kit for ?30+p+p+VAT

I am working on rejetted and choked 1.1 carbs and an adaptor mount as I have surced a healthy supply of 1.1 carbs.
