I'm 23, but with only 3 years driving, and 3 points.

Plus some girl in a Yaris drove into me 2 years ago, and it's still hanging over my head.

This year I have 1 year no claims, and TPFT is still ?725.

It's my daily too so I can't insure it under a classic, I do too many miles.

And plus it's now in Kent having a new Engine and Gearbox, so too late lol.

Realistically, how much can you afford, or have you now changed your mind?

I was willing to spend around 3-4k, which would have included insurance.

I had a quote for insurance declaring all the mods, through HIC and it was ?1250 TPFT. Unless the value of the car exceeds ?5,000 then I have to insure it full comp, which would bump it up to around ?2.3k.

So yeah I changed my mind, I've spent just under ?1400, having a reconditioned engine + gearbox (fitted), which is exactly the same so insurance doesn't change.

I was sold a very neglected Mk1 which was unfortunate, and I've been driving it almost a year without taking it off the road and sorting it. So I pretty much ruined it, for the wrong reasons too, which I don't wanna go into.

Ok no worries. I guess someone wants to try out this conversion though - anyone else interested?

Problem I see things is, you'd only really want to go diesel for economy reasons. Once you're talking about spending ?2000 or more on an engine conversion, the possibilities really open up in petrol engine choices (20vT if you do it yourself, 2.0l 16V, etc) and the lightweight Golf doesn't really need the torque of a diesel, it needs the power from a petrol engine. The high and fast revving nature suits it. Maybe for a large VW camper - starts making sense - but for a Mk1 Golf, there's a reason why people seem to stick with petrol!

I'm happy enough for someone to prove me wrong and I wouldn't mind seeing what a decent conversion performs like.

It was generally for MPG and reliablilty, I've had a mk4 PD and I loved it, really nice drive, great built engine.

I just fancied the best of both worlds, I've been really frustrated with my engine over the last few months, cause of the K-Jet systme, I've almost changed everything! lol

It all depends what you want, it's almost the same as your VR6 conversion, it's a heavy engine and relistically if you wanted it for speed you could just drop a g60 or 20vt in it like everyone else.

But it's good to be different and try new things, and I'm not arguing with you, I think it's a great conversion and you're doing a great job :P

Yeah exactly - if you did the conversion, it would be for the technical challenge of it itself; or the uniqueness.

After all, if we factor in price vs performance - we'd all be driving a ?200 Mk2 Golf GTI 16V!!!

We'll see how the future goes, I'm sure by the time I'm ready to think about doing it a couple of other people will have it done by then.

I couldn't ever see myself in a mk2, it'd be like cheating! :P

ive just bought a MK1 Golf C rolling shell and originally was going to "attempt" a 1.8 20VT conversion but….

im a senior member of Tdisport.com , I drive a Seat Ibiza 1.4TDI PD80 (Mapped to about 114bhp)

soo i would really like to turn my MK1 into  A VRS/FR PD130 Powered MK1 TDI

id like to try because as said above there doesnt seem to be a MK1 TDI so it would be something different

ive been quoted around 5,300 for a full conversion by a local tuning company just dont have that kind of money  :(

i was kinda hopeing that somebody had done one so i cud ask lots of questions as this is my first ever conversion

south africa citi golf

As far as I'm aware, the recently demised citi golf from South Africa, was basically the same as the Mk1. The factory was shippd from the USA, when they stopped production there. The later models featured a dash from a fabia? Fabia came in Tdi, I believe. Would this make the mk1 tdi conversion easier? bens_cab, have you done a conversion yet? I have a cab golf. I have always been interested in putting tdi lump in. There is a guy in States that did an excellent tdi conversion on his caddy. i will post link when I find it. Thoughts anybody?

I seen one in a mk2 at edition but I forgot to look at what dash it was running.

The problem with it is that to uses fly by wire and from what i've heard you have to get every single sensor working to get it to run - obviously you can map the ecu to a certain extent.

Ben what did you use on your 20vt nstead of the fly by wire? or did you use it?
