New Mk 1 1983 GL owner

Hi.

I've just finally got my grandads old Golf Mark 1 insured and been out in it for some practice.

Few specs:

GL
1.5
Met Red
1983
58k.


Now its been in a garage for pretty much 15 years with about 2 months usage in 2001, but thats it.

Its had new pads/disks and its passed its MOT.

Anything I should look out for etc in terms of wear and tear? Engine mounts?

hi m8, ive got a GL too, funnily enough when i got mine it had 58000 on the clock, done a few more now though

Any idea on why there is a jerkyness when changing gear? Engine mounts or what?

Ah so there're not originals? Any ideas on where to get some?

I kinda want to get some tasteful alloys tho? (I want it looking as original as possible but I want to improve the handling/breaking etc…)

New radio is on the list but brake upgrades possible as well?

It's your car to do whatever you want with but try not to spoil it.

Try crazy for some wheels/hubcaps or would look nice with some period GTI 9-spokes at a pinch. Whatever you do don't hack the interior about fitting 6x9 speakers.

Servcing the standard brakes (new disks/pads/shoes and fresh fluid) and new shocks and top mounts for less than ?100 will improve the handling and stopping.

What about the suspension things?

As I've said, I want to keep it as original as possible.

I haven't even got a full license yet (learning lol).

But next year once I have a NCB I'll look at modifications.

You might like to look at all the rubber mounts/bushes etc as with all that time doing nothing they are likely to have become perished.  Oh and change the cambelt if you haven't done already :wink:

can confirm changing topmounts and dampers on the front has made a massive difference to ride on myn. Used to crash and bang over any imperfections in the road and was much heavier on stearing.

Cheap to do as well.

Are changing them a relatively easy job? Cambelt I *think* was done, will ask, how long do they usually last?

IE One I can do with a Hanyes manual and a set of tools?

Suspension, I think ill do it if its cheap and easy to get parts, it is abit crashy. Again easy to do?

Any ideas on where to get these parts?

I used AVS carparts for the suspension bits, quick and the top mounts are the quality febi ones. As for if it was cheap enough, link below so you can price online and judge.

Ok cool, once I pass my test I shall look into that!!  

Also the story with this Golf is that the Weather Forecaster/presenter Michael Fish ordered it from a friend of my granddads, but he changed it to something else so this one became free, granddad was looking for a new car and he got the golf
