CLIPPER CABRIOLET - Favourite Photos and Chat

Hey Everyone,

If anyone has a cabriolet, post your favourite photo in this topic.

It would be really cool to see what other people have done, and give me an idea of what mine could end up looking like.

Also keen to get to know a few people on here…so if you ever fancy a chat or have any good stories to tell about your car, post them here.

Thank you!!

Thank you, yea…mine's a Karmann too…and at the moment, off road and a non starter as well! Was given to me by my uncle a while a go and have been trying to get it started since. Going to see it again tomorrow, so if anything changes, will let you know. ]

How much did you manage to get the chrome bits for…handles etc?

I think all cabs are 'Karmann' (don't quote me, not 100%)

Here's my '84 GTI Clipper(I think?? clipper = big ass bumpers right?)

I bought it in July to take round Europe…After buying a Haynes, changing most things I could as an absolute amateur (plugs, caps, pipes, magic tree etc.) and completing a 6000 mile round journey, I absolutely LOVE it!  It's going nowhere, I'm saving for a new roof lining and one day plan to do full resto (after practising on a mini)

Great car, love the bumpers.

That sounds awesome. Originally, before I started taking driving lessons I was hooked on the old mini, but then after sitting in one for the first time, realised I was too tall to be comfortable driving one!

I'm so glad now my uncle has given me this car…needs some work but can't wait till it starts running and I can get out and about in it. What countries did you visit and what did you end up doing around Europe?

Yours isn't a Clipper (its a GTI), neither did it come with a 'Clipper' body kit as standard, since it was introduced around 1986-1987. Having said that, it was a very popular thing to do in the time, to stick the Clipper kit onto earlier cabbys (and hatchbacks) so all's good.

Why do I always think "boat" when I hear the word "Clipper"?

I am defo into Clippers.  Mine is a 1990 18 carb, with 17" rims, tinted windows, black diamond paintjob, have got a GTi driveshaft and gearbox which has somehow made a huge difference in the pulling of the car, she just seems to want to keep on going and going and going …..  She's a real head turner (probably coz you can hear her coming for miles   )

I'm even more glad that I didn't have to pay anything for it! Because it's a non-starter, was just sitting on my uncle's drive and he knew I loved it, he's letting me work on it and have it for nothing…well, just a bit of gardening and some window cleaning! :D

sweet deal.

Thanks for the info Paul, perhaps I will de-clipper it when I come to restore it someday in the distant future, but I think it looks really cool.  It's chunky at the same time as being thinner than most modern cars.  How about my Karmann comment? All cabs are Karmann??

Mark…I set off From Glasgow and in a month travelled as far west as BudaPest for a bit of Sziget action (www.sziget.com) and to see the killers.  This wasn't the reason for the trip, just something to landmark it and build around.  Took the ferry from Dover to Calais, then travelled up through Belgium, Holland, across Germany, through Czech Republic, into Hungary, then Austria, Northern Italy, THe whole of France (South to North) and back up to Glasgow.

just under 6000 miles - fantastic trip…I would do it again anytime, and I wouldn't change much, certainly not the car, with it's roof down abilities.

Highly recommend all cabby owners go a long summery cruise with the roof down, makes you convinced it's the most sensible purchase you've ever made, and it is priceless.

Cheers,

Tones

Sounds excellent, would love to do the same thing someday. Does the club organise anything like that to go out as a group?

About 6'2 or 6'3. Had pretty much no head space at all.

Well dude, I'm 6'1 and have never sat in one.  There's a possibility that after 7 years or so of wanting one (badly) I may find the problem.

I would get one regardless, and just find joy in restoring it.

Yea, they seem to be great little cars to work on. Could always take out the back seats and move the front ones back somehow for extra leg room :p
