Wheels sticking out arches

My mate has a caddy, the ats cups stuck out so he brought 4 replacement arches for a caddy and the bodyshop cut his existing ones and the new ones and added them to the caddy, it looks excellent and you would never know what had been done, it was the cheapest way he could find to do it.

Exactly how I built these 8)

Ive just been browsing the net, and found some Berg rally arches… (look about 4" wide bubble arches). They are priced at ?240 + postage.

Which repair panels did you use for those extensions? metal arches?

I made them using an old american customisng trick. I used a plasma cutter along the existing arch/flare,cut all the way around leaving 1/2" at each end still attached, carefully pull the lip away from the body as far as you need to create your new arch.I then used welding rods cut to length to hold the arch at the correct distance(Still with me :? ).Then simply  fabricate your new arch skin tack weld into place (or spot weld ) lead fill, thin skim of filler, bit of paint and finally Bish,Bash Bosh!!! one arch only another three to go(PS took me 2 days per arch before I was pleased and I was a panel Beater!!) :D

thats how i thought u may have done it, I used the same method on the rear arches of the caddy… used Mk2 Arches, and fabricated them to fit…

I got done 18yrs ago for wheels sticking out too much (!)  It was my old Mini and the fronts stuck out about 1cm from the arches. It didn't have the arch flares on as I had started prepping it for a respray. The offence code was (I think) CU20 and when I looked it up it was something like "driving a vehicle in a state or with accessories liable to cause injury". Got 3 pojts and a fine. Insurance jumped up ?50 too (was only paying ?120 at the time). The good old days !!!

Did you have black and silver plates on when you were pulled over?

If VOSA got you on the wheels then I'm really surprised they didn't do anything about the plates.

Just wondering. :dontknow:

I've been told that it's the tread of the tyre that is not allowed to come past the arch with no law about rim or sidewall not being able too, hence alot of euro style wheels on british roads?  :dontknow:

i got hold of the VOSA Regulation book today, and looking through it, it does state "an item protruding by 5mm or more from the external surface which, on impact could penetrate the human body and cause injury".

This does not include wing mirrors, etc because they were manufactured on the car.
