Wheels sticking out arches

Hi guys, im new to this club, but some may recognise my Caddy from other clubs / shows, etc.

I have always been running 7x15" wheels, and now have fitted some 8x13" ATS Classics. Trouble i have isthat the front wheels stickl out the arches about 1.5", and about 1" on the rear.
I got pulled over for this and issud with a probihition notice and am not legally allowed to drive the car until i correct the wheels protrution.

My argument is… how do hotrods, etc get away with it? Have i got a case to argue with the VOSA (who pulled me in)?
I dont even think GTI Arch extensions will be wide enough to cover the wheels either?!

Any advice?

Yeah thats what i was thinking, but ideally i'd rather not.
If worse comes to worse, i could get some Mk1 Plastic arches, and fibreglass mould them an inch or so wider? then spray them?

i had 7-13 starmags on my mk2 polo with 5mm spacers. they stuck out a good inch and was only advised on the mot. dont know if vosa and mot rules are diferent but might be worth checking with your local mot station

they are an mot failure. no arguement with vosa or plod to be had. flared arches or less extreme wheels are the only legal option.

Hot rods don't get away with it. Fit smaller wheels, or wider arches - problem solved.

The wheels are not allowed to protrude past the bodywork on any vehicle in the uk, its supposed to be something to do with pedestrians apparantly? but if they hit your rim surely the wing mirror sticks out further?

the laws on vintage cars is slightly different, thats why the hot rodders do what they do and get away with it! in the USA they even run without any mud guards etc etc
VOSA are quite a powerfull organisation and they seem to be appearing more and more lately!! PG9 issueing for window tints and defects

wider arches is the only way to get around it, coz its alright to run 5 inch wider arches but not wide rims than the arch :banghead:

luckily for me my 7.5 and 8j rims i just refurbed and widened sit just bang in line with my clipper arches as you look down, so hopefully they will leave me alone :dontknow:  if not i will just plant drugs on them

Oh, another way to get round the problem is to narrow the axles so the wheels 'tuck into' the arches. This is what a lot of people do to fit wide rear wheels, eg you hear a lot about narrowed Jag/Ford rear axles, etc. Of course, its almost completely irrelevant for a Mk1 Golf. I've seen a couple of cars with shortened wishbones, driveshafts and custom top mounts, but its an awful lot of work to do.

Dunno who supplys them? maybe you could just use some arches off a corrado? they have a nice flare and are at least a VAG item and easy to get, would look pretty cool re worked onto a caddy

Why not fit narrower wheels? Why do the wheels need to be so wide for the car?

i bought the wheels at a bargain price, so couldnt really refuse!
Originally i wanted 7's up front, and 8's at the rear, but i ended up getting 4 8x13's instead.

I see so many Mk1's running with the wheels protruding the arches, there MUST be a way of getting round it? Surely not every1 has this trouble when running wide wheels?
My mate is an MOT tester, so we looked in his regulation book and it doesnt mention anything about wheels prodruding arches?! …yet the VOSA say it is not allowed. I would love the proof, or at least the statement that the VOSA go by, they must have a more in depth book of MOT regulations than a garage does.

The MoT isn't a check on the legality of the car, though. Basically, its illegal, except on certain vehicles (and there's really only a handful, and you're not going to get your caddy into that group) and all the other cars are also illegal. You've been caught and they haven't, though.

My mate has a caddy, the ats cups stuck out so he brought 4 replacement arches for a caddy and the bodyshop cut his existing ones and the new ones and added them to the caddy, it looks excellent and you would never know what had been done, it was the cheapest way he could find to do it.
