What made you buy your first ever Mk1?

Confession - didn't really go for Mk1s when they were new and preferred the Mk2 look.  BUT the original shape has aged so well, and when I wanted an affordable but classy soft top it had to be a Mk1 Golf, nothing else to compare.

AND (when it's running well) my cabby is as much fun to drive as a modern Porker, albeit a bit noisier and not quite as quick.  I get just as many rubberneckers and camera phones in the Rivage as well.  8)

a guy at work got me in to veedubs as i had also been a mini man having had 4 of them already, and im only 22!!! also had minis in my fam. well Steve was selling his mk4 estate, so i brought that as my daily hack, and then i was looking for something as my track car to repace the mini and Steve convinced me that a mk1 gti would be perfect…. the clincer was letting me have a go in his fully restored mint gti with its 1.9 race engine…ssssooooooooooooooooooooo fast!!!!!!! i was hooked!!! hence a few weeks later i had my own and in a month ive already stripped it, buckets, harnesses, cage, audi throttle body, KnN, and soon if Scouse gets back to me a modded head and cam  :P

when I turned 17, my dad and I went to the breakers to find a new smashed polo 2001 onwards. There was one in there with light front damage, but as well as that there was my future black GL sitting outside, looking like it hadnt had a wash since new!

In the end though, all it needed was a new waterpump and clutch cable, and withn 59100 miles on the clock, it became my new car instead of the polo.

I originally didnt want it because I thought it was too old, but I soon warmed to it after driving it for a while, and now I put my heart and soul into cleaning and maintaining it!

Im just grateful to my dad for buying it even though I said no, because Im never going to part with it now :)

when i was 15, walking back from school, saw this mk1 that made my jaw drop, had a blue/purple colour change paint, polished wide ass 15" 5 spoke wheels and was proper low with a clipper kit fitted.
this was mid 95 so looked good back then

started work after leaving school and a couple of months later the lad who owned that very golf started working there too he sold the car to someone local and bought it back a couple of years later

i passed my driving test at 19 and bought a metro as a first car, that lasted a few months till i found out this golf was available again and had to have it.

my first mk1 was the actual mk1 that made me love mk1's 4 years before i had a mk1

I remember my Mum and Dad had MK1 Polo and a MK1 Jetta! They then had loads of other cars, escorts and maestros!    Then they got a MK2 Golf. A few of my friends at school seen it and said i should try and get my Mum to get a MK1. Then a few years later we all turned 17 I ended up with a MK2 and another couple of boys got  MK1s! I always wanted a MK1, then on of my friend was selling his MK1 that he stripped and left sitting on his drive. So i had a look and could see through the floor so i gave him ?100 for it! There's not many MK1 golfs up here on the wst coast of Scotland (Oban) so if any one here wants to get a good they would have to travel for a min of about 2 hours!

I spent years messing around with rubbish French hatchbacks like the AX GT and 205 GTi. Then I went to work for Audi and it opened my eyes to the VAG product.

I owned a Polo G40, which I loved, a real hooligan car even though I am such a boring sensible driver. For some reason I always wanted a Mk1 GTi though, which is weird because really the GTi of my childhood was the mk2 (late 80's)!

think mine dates back to when the old man bought an old polo square back man I must of been about 6 or something and that car just ran and ran and ran never put a foot wrong. bounce forward 14/15 years and there Iam sitting in a mk2 golf gl once again never put a foot wrong(unlike the corsa I had!!!) until a lamppost put an end to that 1.So one night up my pub a guy offers me a wee square back………rip the guys arm off pay ?100 and enjoy the wee monster for 6 months until it was the dreaded MOT time which inevatbly it failed.

all this time I had seen the lad who use to live next door flying round in a mk1 gti caught up with him at a local shop asked a few questions and I was lucky enough for him to give me a blast in it………….then the hunt was on…until I ended up with my mk1 cabby :P

i passed my test in 1991 and wanted summit diferent from my mates, they had mk2 and mk3 escorts and  stradas so i bought a 1978 1500gls in green with biscuit interiour,  after putting it through a wall i bought a 1981 1300 cl with a 1600cc engine on twin webers but it cost too much to run so i sold it and bought a 1984 cavalier sri.
