What made you buy your first ever Mk1?

for me, it was the Mk1 back end! just love the shape of the hatch and rear lights (series 2   )

Mine was in a friends garage looking so sorry for itself I just had to fix it up, spent a year working on it without ever driving a Mk1 before  8O and when I did…. It made all the blood, sweat, burnt skin from welding and a few choice words at times completely worth it!

what made you buy your first Mk1?

Same with me. The tail-end - the way the back screen is a bit sunken. that will never go out of fashion.

And the long, sort of shark-like bonnet and grill. The flared arches too with their stone chip covers. I guess it's no one single thing, but the whole package which comes together so well and makes them look so good. 8)

My older Bro used to be into his aircooled stuff owning a cal look 67 beetle then a 62 splitty which were cool as you like, but forever breaking down!! (Bug Jam 91-95)  8)

Then I remember my mate at work had a LHD Mk1 imported from Germany and it was mint when I was 18 which had been subtlily modded, I really loved the looks of his Mk1 1st, then when I actually drove it……well you know the rest :D

My 1st one was a X reg Mars Red 1.6 gti and it was a screamer!!

wicked little car sold that to a mate who promptley wrote it off and then brought my 1st 1.8 DX in shiny Shwartz Black when I was a mere puppy (20 years old) that got written off by a muppet in a fiesta who was drunk with no insurance (the saddest day of my life)  :(

Now 32 and with my 16th Mk1 under my belt still love the design handling and character

When i was younger, i always wanted my first car to be a mk1 or mk2, it turned out to be a mk2 1.3 4+E which was awsome!! then i sold that and promised myself a mk1 GTi, i'd been working for a year so could afford it eventhough i was going to uni, bought the first one i looked at - series 2 schwarze black 83' GTi which was pretty sweet, i love all retro styling but the mk1 is the best in my oppinion, now liking the s1's and thats what my next one will be, although i think i'll be waiting a few more years before i can afford a nice s1 GTi!!!

I'm now mk1less, ahhhhhhh!

Years ago out in my ford engined mg midget on a long sweeping bend at a safe speed when this mk1 came round me on the outside. that stayed in my mind but they were yuppie cars back then. Forward a few years and my future wife got an early 1500 mk1 which i drove and was so impressed i thought what must a gti be like. Had a few since.

I suppose its was its overall appearance for me, the wedge shape stance and its side profile, it just looks so right 8)
that and seing Richard LLoyds black mk1 winning everything in the early years of touring cars! the cars just looked good to me even in standard form, and I got my first mk1 when i was 17, a 1978 1600 GLS with a badly knocking bottom end!!, a few weeks later and me and my big bro had put in a new crank, shells etc etc and a webber twin carb, and it was a little flyer!! easily as fast as a gti  well almost

When i was 5 or 6 (1980) the mk1 gti really was the car to have, i had a toy gti and it was the dogs.. Ive always loved them since and when i was 17 i found a really rough 1981 mars red gti with 106k miles on the clock. I had to put a new front pannel/vallance on it and do the wishbone joints, it cost me ?600. I owned it for 2 years and sold it to my mum who used it for ages..

Really i just love the styling, if you think back to what else was on the market in 1980, the golf gti just blew them away.. I owned a triumph spitfire for a while, it was 1981, the same year as my gti.. there was no comparasom the gti was so technologically advanced!

I actually fell in love with my older brothers mk2 8V when i was about 10. 10 years on and i'm well inot the mk1 feeling, to be honest i only really started showing major interest about 18 months ago, a friend bought one (an 83 mars red GTi) and i remember him coming down the street in it, looking at it head on with the duckbill style front splitter and the sidelights on…… porn.

I pick my 1st GTi up tonight :D

my 1st mk1 was the 1st car i ever bought i was 18 and it was a 1.1 in metallic green. so off to my mates spray shop for a respray in mars red with the hatch mat black to make it look like a GTI the year was 1982 i even got some red insulation tape and put the strip round the grill,
found some wheel trims at the WV dealer that looked just like alloys.
it did for the time look the dogs the thing i never did was put the GTI badges on didnt think that would be right
i had that little car HEN307N till the floor pan rusted through in the rear and the revers gear went
it has taken 25yrs to get another but at least this time the badge is the one i wanted but couldn't afford way back then :D

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

All my mates were driving XR2 and XR3, I wanted something different so went looking at the auction and got my first Golf GTI mk1 back in 1989, sadly a couple of years later had to sell due to all the twoc'ers making the Insurance go sky high on all hot hatches.  :banghead:

I've been lucky enough to have hand-me-down mk1's!    Had a couple of mk1's in the family when I was little so grew fond of them, then when the time came I learnt to drive in one…preferred it to all other (newer) cars 'cos it had nicer feeling gears and was the perfect size, not too big, but not so small that you feel daft, and nippy, had a nice car smell too! Loved it to bits even though it was mega rat-look (not even the trendy kind). My dad's love of them has well and truly rubbed off on me - even average cars just a couple years old just don't have the same enjoyability in my experience. And now of course even the youngest mk1's are official classics and it's nice to have the odd rubber-necker now and then. But most of all, there's nothing you need an expert garage to do because you haven't got 'special' tools or diagnostic equipment!
