I don't get it, why does no one want to hold on to that car?? I tried to buy it a year or so ago but couldn't get the cash together in time but it looks nice from all the pics.

Has anyone from here checked out the car in person?

I have seen the car and been in it, it belongs to a good mate of mine Neil, and its a lovely car, ok its not a show winner anymore but it runs like a dream.

It is very well put together, from the engine install to the interior (cream Corrado leather) and it also has a fat stereo install!!..oh and the 16" BBS RS's!!

all this alone is worth the asking price, let alone the other bits.

The only reason my freind bought it is because it was going cheap due to the fact it had been rear ended, but the damage was not that bad!!

My mate had it proffesionally repaired, but if you knew Neil he is well into his stripped out racers, and track cars, not show and shine!!!

He had it on ebay not long ago, had offers but they were all dreamers, so its now up on Pistonheads, and at that price it is a bargain!!!

A VR6 engine conversion in a MK1 alone would cost you ?5k!!!!
If I had the money I'd have it off him, and put small bumpers back on it and keep it clean!

There have been a lot of people slagging it off who have'nt even been near the car!! but its a good car, if you dont believe me go and see it yourself?

Thats all I can say  :dontknow:

The reason for this is that there are far fewer tintops on the road than there are cabbys,

therefore because of this they are rarer,so they are more sought after and when this happens people are preppered to pay a higher premium.

Also the fact that tintops are far better than, in the words of Wooders "floppytops"!!!!

^ But they are not are they :| , they are essentially the same car, and production runs of the rusty sunroof cars far out weigh the cabriolet, the prices are always gonna be higher for the rusty sunroof version purely based on its desirability as the original hot hatch, not because its cabrio cousin is not as good a car, all cabrios prices dip this time of year, come spring it goes back up, and the rusty non sunroof or rusty sunroof version maintains a reasonable value, having said that its not that much really ?1000-?3000, thats not much really is it……..a late cabriolet is just the same price

Has anyone driven a MK1 with a VR6 conversion? I would be worried the additional weight would kill the handleing characteristics of what is a great car?!

Garage:
83 Mk1 Golf GTi Campaign - Mars Red - Totally Standard
78 Honda Civic 1200 Hondamatic - Silver
07 Honda Civic ES 2.2 CDi - Black, all the options!

It definately looses all of the MK1 characteristics but is still a blast to drive,
power to rate ratio is still very good and its running 200bhp at the mo!!

Looks like a smart car, and is probably worth the money :)

However I don't think a VR6 in a Mk1 is that beneficial compared to other engine transplants :dontknow:

No need to edit, I partly agree. For the given power (180-200bhp), there's more sensible engine options. But the 6 cylinder has a distinctive sound and refinement which you simply can't achieve with a 4 cylinder engine. Also I'm doing my conversion for the technical challenge of it, too.

True! The noise of a VR6 is uncomparable
