Where can you find out what group your Mk1 is in?

I used to work at a C.I.S insurance branch, so there was a big book with a list of any car imaginable to look through! I imagine you should be able to ask any of the insurers what group a car is in. It would be easiest to pop into a high street broker I'd have thought - they'll all have the same list…save ringing up a call centre.
My first car was a Fiat 126 (aka - The Beast) Group 1 insurance. You've gotta start somewhere!  :roll:

As for the 1.6 Gti…if it meant insurance was almost halved it would be worth it, I wouldn't mind a 5 speed 1.6 GTi  

got a quote on a 1.8 GTI yesterday and it was ?750 but withing 2 mins i had performance direct phoning me saying that the web sites wrong and they could just about half it for me!!

which companies offer a discount if you become a member of the mk1 owners club?
