I got punched by a woman!

I probably know a lot more about racism than you do my friend but this isn't a competition. I never mentioned her race, culture, faith, political leaning or sexual preference.

It's very simple, I've obviously only picked out a few key points from a dispute that lasted about ten minutes. During this period she alluded to me  about many things but never mentioned my colour and neither I hers.

Culturally I've never had an issue. I've traveled from Barbados to Sri Lanka to Canada, to Holland, to Spain, to France and Skegness! I take people as I find them. Hate a man for who is not what he is! Her attitude was typically aggressive and confrontational! I honestly believe this to be a trait of her 'culture', this isn't racist but an observation built up over a lifetime meeting people all over the world.

I'm afraid her opinion was that she didn't care what the rules were, she was above them and I had no place in expressing an opinion. Please do take note of one fact. I at no stage asked her to do a damn thing! I simply and politely informed her that she was in the wrong changing room.

Finally just for your information, I approached two Asian women, one Irish woman and two English women and didn't get anything but an understanding look, apology and explanation. Two or three left immediately, two or three finished and left and one hit me! The last thing I would associate with her would be culture.

I'm not TRYING to justify her behaviour. As I said, I don't condone her hitting. In fact, did you read anything that I wrote? It is normal in some countries to have communal changing rooms. Adjusting to other people's cultures can be really hard. Take it from one who knows.

Nor am I trying to use racism as an excuse. As I said, if Tian didn't say anything to her about her race prior to him getting punched, he should just report it regardless of her sex or race.

Tian - thanks for answering my question. Sounds like she's clearly being an idiot then.

It's no problem. This website, like all websites is a engenders the cross boarder community. Frankly that's probably the best thing you can say about the internet. It breaks down the barriers created by geography both man made and otherwise and brings different cultures closer together.

I'm not racist although none of us is 100% immune from prejudice, unfortunately that's only human nature.

Trying to keep an open mind at all times will always be the goal.

Tian

So, you wear speedos when you're not allowed to wear boardies at public swimming pools overseas?    :P

It's a good saying, but sometimes hard to achieve straight away.

If I'm aware of a ruling abroad you follow it and if a clear native of that country pointed out my mistake i would respect their advise and NOT punch them that's for sure, i would NEVER Play the race card abroad, i never had too yet and Ive been to many countries and cultures never felt the need to hit out as yet. I live by a simple rule…. treat people as you expect to be treated by them, if only everybody did the same, simple……………

I guess I'm not explaining myself very well. I'm not talking about the punch at all now. I'm sorry: I strayed off topic. I think Tian has done the right thing and I hope she gets banned from the pool and maybe even charged by the police as what she did is not acceptable.

I was merely commenting on the 'When in Rome…' saying not being as simple we'd like it to be.

I'd like to meet the person who only needs a day to observe a culture, understand all the differences with their own culture, and figure out a way to adjust accordingly without feeling any contention with their life-long beliefs and morals.

I agree but to try and even if very slightly to excuse her actions by cultural differences is not acceptable in any language, culture. the woman needs to be punished for her actions as you rightly said.

I agree. I never was trying to excuse them. Merely expressing my thoughts on why she may have hit out.

And thongs are still things you wear on your feet (I never became properly British).

Its doesn't matter, what her age, sex, race, religion anything she assaulted you!  Its never ok to lay your hands in that fashion on anybody ever…I would talk to the club about a ban for her and also I would talk to the police and get them to have a strong word with her about it.

I wouldn't have been so restrained well done for that, you also have to show your kids the correct way to deal with things….

as a girl i'm appalled that you didnt' hit her back, i'd have expected to be hit back with the same force if it was me doing it to anyone.

however having said that…YOU would be the one banned from the club.

tell the club you want her banned for assaulting you and that they need to sort out the ladies in the mens changing room far better than just sticking stupid signs up, if they have to sit someone outside the door 24/7 to make sure no stupid wimmin get in you changing room then so be it, your as entitled to privacy as anyone else.

also tell the coppers what happened, tell them to contact the sports club as they probably won't give you her name directly when you ask them anyway, they can sort it out from there and you can give a statement, if she does it again to anyone else then she's on record and can be arrested and charged and have a nice record of 2 assaults against her :D bonus!

she deserves all she gets for being so inconsiderate, ignorant, rude and abusive.  you deserve a pint for keeping your temper.

BEWARE KY05 UCO, blind and deaf white haired driver of red transit, avoid at all costs, he thinks running cars on to the verge is ok. i'm fine, car's fine, mood and make up not so good.

Thought i'd give my opinion on the whole being foreign and different cultures. It's all cobblers :naughty: and just another excuse to fall back on. Just to give you some back ground info the 56 in my user name stands for the 56 region of france: Le Morbihan. I lived there in France for 4 years. At the thirteen i never had a problem reading any situation and judging how to behave or hold myself. I never expected to drink a pint in a bar when i was sixteen just as i would never take a slash in the front garden back here in britain. Yes there are differences but that is no excuse. Well done for holding back pyhsically now go for her. By that i mean write a complaint to the pool, get the police involved and name and shame her.

I think you should have spun around with your hands on your hips and a slight forward pervic thrust, and said "I'll give you something to hang your towels on luv"

Nice and patronising, and would have defused her rant, or got you another punch :D
