Nurburgring trip 08 Mk1oc

2008 opening times aren't published yet. Once these are out (and also a lot of the 08 show dates) we can firm things up, don't want it clashing with any major events! I think so long as we sort out a day(s) when its open to the public, and firm up and book the accommodation well in advance, we should be okay.

Looking at the map, its logical to use Dover-Calais, so I'd suggest we aim for this, having the first meeting point somewhere near/in Dover. It would be handy to meet before entering the ferry port, then we can all enter into the controlled port canopy en-masse, therefore providing excellent photo-opportunities! Also travelling together provides safety in numbers. I suppose if anyone lives really close to another ferry port, they could make their own way there.

yes agrred safety in numbers is the way to go also a selection of mk1 spares ie cables ect would be a good idea

the ferry takes 45 minutes from dover to calais to not to long then i think its quite a drive 4 to 5 hours?

guest houses seem cheap so if you were on a budget and wanted to come i think it could be done cheap

it takes about 4 hours to get from the ring to wolfsburg if anyone cares?

I agree with the safety in numbers, plus it'll add to the whole experience  :)

And I am definately up for a trip to Wolfsburg, two birds with one stone and all that :D

I may be up for this. 2 advisorys at this stage; it is a long way to Wolfsburg and more importantly back home. From memory around 9 hours back to Calais. I have done the trip twice and it is a bit of a killer and that was in a modern car. Another thought would be to link in with the Techo Classica at Essen. Excellent classic car show (largest in Europe), a bit closer to home and on from 26-30 March

A European show sounds a great idea - I'll have a look into the abovementioned. I wonder if its worth taking loads of passenger seats (unworn bolsters) and arranging a swap with loads of driver seats?

This is the official site for the TC

S.I.H.A.

There are usually stands from the Mk1 Golf, Scirocco and Polo clubs in Germany.

It is a good idea for swapping seats. I brought a set to sell over there and sold them without even getting them out of the car!! I have a few contacts so could arrange something closer to the time.

You could easily buy herem then fit 2x passenger seats into the front of the car, then at the show swap them for 2x drivers seats, sell them on in the UK for a little benefit in kind...

Aaaah so its more of a general classic car show? Do they ever have VW shows at drag strips, for example I know Hockenheim has a strip comparable to Santa Pod. That would be a blast - we could be the "crazy English" with the fast RHD cars!

Hehe, not to put a damper on things but me and my brother were going to do this a few months ago in his T25, just us two sharing driving staying in his van.

We were going down to the tunnell (from Leeds) Thursday evening going on the train just after midnight.
Drive Friday over to Hockenheim to the bus tuning treffen. Thursday evening to Sunday midday at/on the track.
Drive up to the ring Sunday afternoon/early evening.
Leave the ring Monday afternoon/evening to go up to Zebrugge for the ferry to Hull Friday daytime.
That was via Wolfsburg, the Jagermeister factory and possibly the Stuttgart Porsche museum.

There was a bit of interest in group travel on a van forum but due to people wanting to go to different places and travel different ways everyone who actually went (instead of just making noises) made their own way.

Not saying a group trip won't materialise on here but we need to bear in mind everyone's best ideas on travel and itinerary. That is, someone in Folkestone will campaign for the tunnel and someone from Hull will insist on the ferry.

Should everyone make their own way there and meet nearer the ring or should the Northeners go over and drive down through Holland/Netherlands and the Southerners cross the channel and drive across.

Sorry for the long post and I'm in no way trying to be negative but the logistics are quite significant.

Oh, we didn't get there. Got as far as Tibshelf services on two cylinders and got a lift back home on the big yellow truck with the flashy lights. :banghead:

Yradave says relax.

Not sure if anyone's already mentioned.. would be well worth someone bringing a modern diesel along, in case anyone needs a tow.

If this is between mid June and September I may be able to meet you out there.

If its organised correctly, maybe something for an official club trip, then why not all the northerners (of which i am one living darn sarf) drive down and meet up with the southerners at the chunell, then we all cross togerther and come back via teh ferry to hull and then the southerners can make the same trip through england.. Or vice versa, whichever is easier…
I'm up for helping someone organise it…
Maybe a new thread with details and a poll on dates would go down better

ring

can i suggest that its better to get the ferry from dover to Dunkirk,it costs ?19 depending on what time u travel(usually early in the mornibg for this price or late evening),and cuts about half an hr off the journey to the ring. I agree with dubboy with a 9hr journey from wolfsburg to calais or there abouts,i have mates that live 20mins from wolfsburg and travel there about twice a year and done that trip many times now.It would be easier to travel to the ring from dunkirk!!straight to the ring, have afew days there and then go to wolfsburg which is about 4hrs from the ring roughly from memory. We will be planning a trip mid june if anyone is intrested,

Planning next year's summer holidays?

Don't forget about this! We're going to try and 'semi' organise it through the club. Basically, once the firm calendar for next year's opening times comes out (around end of Feb), we'll decide on a date, then plan stuff around this, eventually ending up with a simple list of trackday insurance, ferry company, B&B, and anything else you need to book in advance. We won't be able to run the money thru the club but I don't mind approaching the above, to ask for a club discount (we can always ask…no harm even if its a small one or no discount but a little freebie or something).

Setting the date also depends on the shows next year, we'll try and find a slot in between. Also we'll plan it as a week away, taking in the 'Ring then onwards to the home of VWs, Wolfsburg, where I believe there is a museum.

late interest, probably of no value...

i was thinking of going to nurburgring next year. though i'd not looked into it. the ?700 tab paul put on it probably rules me out, but i'll look into costs via the hull ferry, and staying on the cheap, camping maybe.

it would be good to go with the club, maybe even a northern contingent and a southern one, cross the channel as you will nad meet up there??? logistical nightmare i know  :dontknow:

Well, you could still come. We aren't doing a 'package' deal at ?700, we'll just publish a 'suggested' insurance company, ferry, B&B accommodation  etc. Obviously, the costs come down for a party of 2 or more. Or we could pair people up who want to 'sit in' with a car or share a room together, etc. So you could look at when we're meeting and conveniently arrange your own trip involving camping and different crossings, to be at the same time.
