I will be going next year for the Le Mans Series race at the F1 track next door and spending a week driving around the Ring. But it will be in my A2 just more reliable I?m afraid.

Are there any requirements of the car (apart from road legality) to consider? Do I realistically need to have a half decent car, because I've only got a stock 1.5 carb?
Last one is can I bring a mate who's not into mk1's? I've got a mate who might be interested, if he's got enough petrol money to pay for his Corvette.
Yradave says relax.

for advice on doing this speak to the guys on www.theminiforum.com and also www.minidirectory.com as both do charity mini runs to the ring, maybe a joint venture for the first year? makes it easier for the first time doing it and also the potential to raise lots of money

Some relevant news
Car insurance companies
So many insurers now exclude the Ring using one mechanism or another that I have given up trying to maintain a list of them. A common wording is to exclude 'de-restricted toll roads'; although they don't name the Nurburgring, it's hard to think what else this could mean.
Car hire companies
Almost all mainstream rental companies now exclude the Ring, so again it has reached the stage where maintaining a list of them is futile. However, there are now a number of local companies hiring out track toys
Breakdown companies
AA 5-Star excludes the Ring by name in its European Breakdown Cover
Terms and Conditions:
http://www.theaa.com/services/european_breakdowncover/european_breakdown_terms.html
What we will not cover
8: The cover is not available to vehicles which are overloaded, used in
rallying, off-road driving or in the N?rburgring or for motorsports.
Green Flag states that they now do not cover "de-restricted toll roads" - same meaning as car insurance companies.
Europe Assistance has the same exclusion as Green Flag.
The safest bet for breakdown cover at the Ring is to join ADAC. They will recover you from the Ring without the usual ?175 recovery charge, and for ?50 you can get cover that is valid in the UK also.
Travel Insurance
RAC Travel Insurance refused to pick up the tab for hospital care after a bike crash on the Ring, claiming that it exceeded the normal level of risks associated with a holiday.
Also remember the penalties for dropping fluid on the track.
if you are with leaking fluids, you will be legally and financially responsible for every crash that occurs as a result. That means you pay for their cars, bikes, injuries, armco bills, the works. You will also pay for the cost of cleaning the fluids from the track, and the costs of closing the track to do it. 8O Budget for everything you can and you will have a great time im sure.

This is a little PDF leaflet from the Ring

I think the minimum speed is 40kph so even minis can make that

so be very very carefull, the footage from the Subaru is all there is!! the green VR6 was needless to say anhialated and the repair bills for the armco and recovery etc etc came in around 3000 euros!!!!!! and thats on top of the "loss" of his car!
i wouldnt do it in any of mine, neither are what i consider track cars and its tooooooo risky, and all that just to qualify to get a Nordshleife sticker on the back window and some boasting rights? im good without it thanks Wolfsburg museum would be cool though

So, looking at the above, its definitely worth checking out specialist insurers. Maybe someone who's been before can suggest companies and typical costs?

Once this is done you need to check when the Ring is actually open. As its closed more often than its open. Click the link and then "events and tickets" this should give you an indication of when the track is available. Lots of car companies test so the track is closed for them. and the Ring timetable runs on the calendar year I think..

Hope this helps

My trip cost about ?400 plus spending and fuel. Stayed in a B&B about 10 miles away from the Ring - that was spot on and really cheap too. It's more a biker place to stay but I was made more than welcome and loads of cold beer on tap. English chap and his Mrs run it and it's now their business. His laps round the ring on his bike is just staggering…
I did the Ring for 4 days ( I think?), Brussels (2 Days) and Lille (1 Day) plus the travelling there and back. Quality trip - love every minute.
Would love to go again in something that I didn't care about - felt a little too on edge in my main car!
Happy to recommend places, costs etc.
Cheers

which should reduce travel costs by a bit at least. Enjoy (but don't count me in).
