my mk1 build up thread.

hello there

 i've started working on the mk1 today and found abit more rust than i thought.
the front pannel was abit too rusty but the expence to replace would be silly so i've gone about fixing it myself with alot of welding and plating.
started off just by stripping it to its panties.





some nasty rust but will be sorted very soon indeed.



i've cut away the bad rust and cutting some steel to replace it with tomorrow.



also stripped interior just to see if we could fint the master cylinder becuase it wasnt in the bonnet and i had pretty much no brakes.



the reason to having no brakes was because the front brakes had air in and just needed bleeding but the rear drums we totaly gone, i now need 4 new shoes and 2 slave clyinders. so im on the funt for them tomorrow.

then soon going to red oxide the inner wings and seal them and spray black.

any commets or tips welcome.

wow some serious rot thair mate and as for you red oxiding the front inners make sure you strip off all the seam sealer. Best tool to do this is a drill and a wire wheel good luck

what year is that car? R reg77?

im not getting it prestine, too much work but the wheels ay?

how much do they actualy go for?

the colour i dunno about yet i am warming to this purple but i do like black or grey.

its a R 76 reg

the rot isnt that bad really only a few places to plate up and im laughing.

found a 10inch peiuce of rot under the car.

coming along nicley now, hopefully get it done soon, afew yers maybe

Get some clean and strip discs for removing rust and seam sealer, there the dogs danglies.  I have saved so much time by using them on mine.

love the original geen, you gota put it back that colour!  8)

i do beleive that could be lofuton green only 3 known to be left in the country that colour get it painted :wink:

it isnt a 76 i found out becuase i dont kno much about mk1's i only kno mk4s and the guy i bought it off said it was a 1976 but th rear lights would be small ones if it was an early 1.

i would respray it green to be 1 of the 4 in the country but i dont like it lol

i might stick with the cadbury purple

I think it's a 77 - it's definitely an S1 as the bulkhead, steering wheel column, and its bracketry are completely different to an S2, and the colour is one of the early pastel shades too.

if mine a S1 why does it have the longer lights?

and is there something about the wipers getting changed over on the later modles?

does any1 kno where i might be able to get a good carpet for my golf ???

been doing more striping latley.
started with the boot and under the seats

the floor under the seats is pretty bad and i have a big hole which we are plating up tomorrow

check out that flinstones style hole
can i get replacments for the seat sliders or how can i get them off?
and i have now finnish the repair on the right inner wing

and put the gti steering wheel on, lot better than the 1 i had before.
