:(  why use a Jap engine though? surely theres enough German engines WORTH tunining that would do a much better job than that? not only that you could buy a golf C and spec it to exactly the same car for about 3k!!! think the guys forgot you never get the cost in labour and time back on a car like this maybe? and being in PVW isnt much of an accolade either is it? you only have to be in one of "the cliques" or the "Grounded" "i own my own bodyshop crew" and your in every month

The quest to be different is usually the cause

The type R is very capable and revvy, bags of fun so a good choice

As for getting money back, too true - although there's usually some idiot out there :)

having driven a type r civic, i would seriously love to do this conversion to my cab.
i seem to remember that the only things needing fabricating were the driveshafts.
just the vtec rev shift is awesome!!

:?  Keeping it all German is the name of the game though surely? putting Jap stuff on a Decent V Dub is like putting Neons on a Rolls Royce surely?…dont get me wrong i like modded cars, i just think some things dont improve the value of a car!! bit like the "cosworth" cabrio….great idea and an awesome engine in an escort cosworth…..just dont really go with the concept of a mk1 golf, most of VW s engines are tuneable to the same money, like the G60 and 16v engines, ok the VR6 engine costs a lot more to tune but not if you supercharge it 8)  and now theres a few R32 Otto engines floating about the choice is getting better 8)

Hmm…really…why?

The DC2 Type R engine has around 195bhp out of the box, NA with no modifications.   So that 200+ he's claiming is no stretch.  I believe the Boxes came with LSDs from factory as well.

What NA VAG would offer you that for reasonable money?

I can't think of one?

Bearing in mind its a track car, so he won't want a V6! Plus of course fitting a V6 would probably need more fabrication to fit the later Subframe set up.

I like the idea of a 1.4 TFSi conversion though, lol

Or there is of course…

I had a 03 civic type R, my bro's just bought a 07 type R. Very good cars, nice and quick and handel very well would have one over a mk5 gti any day.

But when it comes to jap and german mix, I dont like it.

To me when modding a VW all the parts should be from the VAG parts bin.

Its how the wolfsburg engineers started the whole GTi thing in the first place. :)

You have missed my point i think  …..German car… German engineering….improving on that with further German engineering and a German engine transplant from the same stable really is the accepted norm isnt it?
i just cant see how a Jap engine improves a VW thats all…if you want :?  or even like Jap stuff :x  why not just have the whole Jap car and tune that to 10000 bhp? me personally i would rather have a car knowing it was all from the same VW stable even if it was slower, but thats just a case of how much money you spend on any engine in any car, i am sure at Dub shows or in the Dub domain it would carry more cred and definately be worth more and easier to sell if it was all Volkswagen?….but a projects a project and each to there own…i wonder if its like Jap Bikes? and comes with its own repair kit  sorry i just really cant see any attraction to Japanes cars…they all look like datsuns from the 80s with an ironing board on the roof or boot lid or they are great big clumsy looking wedges, everyone allways raves about the power of Jap cars….but what about anything else???…….. exactly….. but thats just my opinion though so dont be offended

Hey its all banter mate, no worries

'Accepted Norm'?  How depressing true, which is why so many VW shows these das really are boring.  Everyone has their own reasons for car modifying, but if someones main reasons for modifying their car are to have 'scene' credibility, increase car value, and make it easier to sell…Jes I feel sorry for them, how Soul-less.

I really did get your point, but that doesn't mean I totally agree.  To me German Auto Engineering really doesn't mean much, of course its an enduring reputation that VAG very much like to play on to shift units!  Ironically of course, in recent years Japanese have overtaken the 'large' German manufacturers for reliablity etc.  Top Gear Survey last year had Skoda first overall.  Fair play to them!  Then we had….Lexus, Honda, Mazda Mini, Subaru, Toyota, Porsche.  VW Were 19th.  Says it all really, it really isn't just about power. VW do NOT have the edge they may have once had.

I'm playing devils advocate of course :P …I should say I totally understand why people would want to keep the mk1 original, it is an iconic car after all, I also understand why people want to keep modifications in the VAG stable…very simple, ease of fitting.  Hell, thats what mine is!

  yeah some good points……..i know VW dont often come out on top of "top gear" reliability stakes……but lets face it some of that "information" comes from disgruntled owners who have problems with the dealer or getting parts from vw uk for their "new" car…hell when i worked for VW when a new model came out and a problem occured we would get VW Wolfsburg to "steal" the part from the production line!!!!! as parts were sparse………..it also comes back to this though….the people who buy dubs know they are not perfect……but they are relatively cheap to buy….easy (in the main) to maintain and look after..parts last very well usually……and on top of all that the car will still be around in 20 years time with a decent residual value!!!!! Dubin is really more than just stats or speed/performance figures………….its an identity 8)  and i hear ya about the Dub show scene…..it infuriates me how many nice cars you see at shows…in the car park!!!…when the flavour of the month.."own bodyshop" endless chequebook brigade win all the trophys……its the age old question……..is a car built from scratch by its owner over a period of time with effort blood sweat and tears better than the same car that was just given to "a garage" for engine work paint and wheels only to be rolled out as "look at MY car" at the next big show….as nice as they sometimes are i still hold ANYONE in higher regard who gets their own motor sorted by themselves at weekends and spare time without big budget spends just to chase trophies! but they are still able to produce a superb car…to me thats what makes a true enthusiast and i personally tend to be drawn to cars of this type…you know the ones that "arent perfect" and actually get driven on public roads all the time!!! but non the less look cool for whatever reason 8)

Hi this is my car, a friend sent me the link. The only reason the vtec is in there is VW just dont have a N/A engine with good power unless you spend big money thats all. I have used Honda engines in several cars and i can only say i have had 100% reliabilty, also this is a standard ish engine still good for 220bhp at steath on a club GTI RR day. Please remember this car is a trackday car not a show car.

Ray

I have a new project which is going to balance this argument,It is a 08 Type R and I am thinking of junking the engine and putting in a 1.1 from a 85 polo!!That will show em!!

Speeding is like masturbation, everyone does it ,but it's not something you should record and put on the internet!!

Ah yes, saw this in PVW.
I will say it gets away with it being a track car but what I couldn't understand is why it was featured in PVW?! Redline Magazine? Yes!

Still I don't understand why choose a VTEC over so many other engines out there. It's been done before but what about a bike engine? Or 2 bike engines? lol

And I agree with a lot of what Topoftherange is saying. At GTI International I spent over an hour in the car park looking at the Dubs. The best Dubs are the properly used Dubs, the ones driven to and from work, get the shopping etc. because thats what they were made to do - work.  8)

some of you guys can sound so anal sometimes. Owning a mk1 is about loving the shape, style, ect for one person. for another it maybe the iconic status of the car. for others it's about making them 'your own'.

agree that jap engines are far superior to vag engines. so why not use it? it spices things up a bit and at the end of the day.. the guy paid his cash to but HIS mk1 and quite frankly he can do what the hell he likes with it.

Good on him for trying something different and not sticking to ' the all mighty scene'. the scene is like an old porn star… it was good once but has now done the same thing so many times it's just boring.

fair play to you!

i'd love to do it

considered doing it to a golf of some description myself for drag racing

as has been said before an easy 200bhp + is surely a good option to play on the drag strip :D
