Why do you own a mk1?

Ive always been into cars for as long as I can remember and when I was little, I liked the sound of 'Volkswagen' I used to imagine them being huge with 18 wheels

Obviously until I got older and my uncle got a mk3, wasnt too keen on this one but I often heard him talking about the other models.

about 4 years ago my mum had a mk4 1.9 GTTDi this felt very quick to me and I dreamed of having one for my first car.

Not so long ago I looked into the earlier models, the mk2 (always seen them about thought they looked ok) and of course the mk1. Took an instant shine to the mk1, then after seeing them on Topgear decided I must have one for my first car.

It was either a mk1 golf or a mini.

I just saw this little convertible up for sale on the side of the road on the way to my friend's house. We called and went back to test drive it half an hour later. My friend's other half kicked a tyre and said "seems alright". My friend and I knew nothing about Golfs (or stuff under the bonnet in general). Nor did her other half it seems.

I was lucky enough to land myself a Rivage that has done me proud ever since I got her. I had no appreciation of Golfs prior to this. I do now. 4 hrs of driving with the top down today after the weekend's music festival. I got her to 105mph on the way there, then got scared and slowed down "just in case (…?)".

my first car was a beetle back in 89 and did loads of meets with it .even the first bug frezze. for a couple of years, after keep chucking money at it i wanted a change.i saw a mk1 driver w reg 1899 pounds and in 91 was not bad , took it for a test drive and it was sound.but after only earning 65 quid a week they would not give me credit.after that moment i loved em but being young and stupid i bought a 1983 escort mk3 ghia, all me mates were like you rich bugger but i know differnt and never had any money and after 2 weeks i regreterd every time i got in that thing.anyway what goes round comes round and was givern a cabby and now all it needs is a bit of work and its on the road.its like dreams do come true if you wait long enough like 16 years :D

I have always liked Golfs in general, but there is something so special about the Mark 1s.  There are alot of Golfs around where I live but it was only a few years ago that I noticed a Mark1 Cabby driving round.  I have always admired them but seeing it in the flesh made me fall in love.  Their quirky ways & that feeling you get when you sit in one.  They certainly test you but no matter what, that love always remains.

I've wanted one since I was about 8, the perfect car came up when I was selling mine and I HAD to have it   I got in contact with the bloke the day I saw the advert, and was round with a deposit the next afternoon.

As well as that, I thought it was about time I got a decent car after a run of not so good ones (Corsa, Nova, Corsa, Mini, Corsa)

Not really sure what made me want one, I can't explain it, I just needed one in my life  :D

For me, it was a little yellow polo mk2 sport coupe that did it, my mum and dad bought it new in 1985 about a month before i was born, i grew up with it and always remember being about 5 in the back on the motorway to see my grandparents and my dad put the windows right down for a laugh, i can still feel the wind and thats 1 of my earliest memories. the polo went on for years and years and just before my driving test in 2003, i took it for a cheeky spin to the end of the road

naughty naughty i know, sadly about a week later the gearbox blew up and it went as a deposit on a golf mk3. i still miss that car very much although i could have sworn i saw her on a dual carraige way about 3 years back. if i ever find her. i'm gonna buy her and rebuild her from the ground up, sadly i think she's probably long gone now.

Anyway, once i passed my test i shared the mk3 with my mum for a while until a taxi nicely side swiped it and buggered off back to pakistan  :x  then i had a nissan sunny 1.3 (BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!   ) And lastly a polo mk4 which i absolutely loved until i foolishly took a corner to quick in icy scotland and hit a boulder…, after about a years break from driving, which i hated but could not afford a car, i saw an advert for a golf mk1 C in gambia red, i though why not and handed over 400. i have'nt looked back, its by far the best, most fun i have ever owned, i've made some great friends and the car gets looks of people ( which is a good thing) i love it and i would'nt sell her for the world.
