I think the Passat 1.8i is a digifant - do you know the engine code? If its not, then it could be a 1.8 16V KR (which is K-Jet). Which is the current engine in the caddy at the moment?

i know it's a 8v same block as a mk2, don't no the engine code though, my engine at the mo is a deisel lump that the bloke wants back.

Its the same block but the head is different. Also the manifolds are going to be different, so you'll need Mk1 versions of those. And exhaust downpipe (probably). And a whole load more stuff, etc.

The good news is that you're starting from a diesel, which means the engine mount is in the right place. You'd also need a transmission, since the diesel one will be hopelessly overgeared. And is your diesel a 4 speed or 5 speed? If yours is a 4 speed, you need to weld a bracket onto the steering rack into a slightly differnet place, or swap for a 5 speed rack (I think).

if it's a digifant or 16v then ideally you want the whole car. i assume it's not a 20v lump.

It would be sweet (and worth the hassles) if the Passat just happened to be a 2.0 16V GT, with a 9A engine in it.

na its not a 2.0 iv try'd finding one but they seem pretty rare, i can have the hole car so i can get the looms and everything. mines got a four speed box at the mo but i do have a 5 speed mk2 box around i could put in, if i done that do you fink i'd have to change the rack for the mount? cheers for the advice by the way i stupidly thought mk2 stuff would pretty much drop in.

It doesn't make sense to buy the Passat engine stuff, even if its free. You may as well hunt around for a 1.8 injection out of a Mk1 GTI. Don't even bother with a Mk2 GTI, since you'll simply end up throwing bits away and you'll have to buy more odds and ends.

Go to one of the major shows with the facilities to take away an engine, etc. Traders hate having to load up heavy stuff at the end of the day, so they'll often accept a good price for stuff.

Alternatively there's at least 3 Mk1 specialist breakers, and loads of VW breakers.

mk1 gti donor car would obviously be ideal. bear in mind, scirocco's utilise the same engines and running gear.

The 1800 injection engines in Passats are digifant. It'll go straight in your Caddy just the same as one out of a Mk2 Gti would. The only issue you'd have is with the exhaust downpipe, but one designed for a Mk1 Gti should do the job. You can run the engine as a digifant in your Caddy, I believe it's just a few wires that need patching in to the Caddy loom but if you've got the option to take the wiring from the Passat, you should be able to work things out with the aid of a Haynes manual.

think you may need to change the exhaust manifold as well as down pipe to a mk1 item.

Which year Passat? Is it the B3 (88-93) (ugly curved front)? If so you're okay, all the other Passats had in-line engines.

i was under the impression that the passat manifold was the same as the mk2 one. this has a different offset to the mk1 manifold and will create issues with the down pipe fitting. i may be wrong.

Yep - I think Wooders is right about the manifold. Maybe an opportunity to buy an aftermarket tubular job from somewhere like Ashley. If on a budget, you'd get a 2nd hand Mk1 exhaust manifold easily from someone who's put a tubular one on. Just couple it to a Mk1 Gti downpipe and there you go.
I have assumed it's one of the round front type Passats as I'm not sure they did an 1800 injection in a Passat prior to this (?)  I'm pretty sure the older, 'powerful' Passats used 5 cylinder 2.0 engines.
Cheers,
Mark

Yep AFAIK the 1800 injections were B3/B4 era, before then it was inline 1.8 carb, or 2.1 (5 cyl) injection. And then after, they went over to 20V (1.8) inline (amongst other engine) just like the Audi A4.
