IIRC they should be flush - have you already welded in the rear panel?

Yip the panel went on yesterday. But just thinking, when I tried the lights in place the tailgate was just sitting on the rear panel without the lock catch attached, so it may have been sitting lower than it should. will post some pics today.

Here are a couple of pics of the rear of the car, minus the rear panel and the spare wheel well. I took them yesterday morning before fitting and welding the rear panel in place.
I am away to set about it with the grinder now. I will post more of the panel in place shortly.

I will try them in again now that the bootlid catch is in place and the panel has been welded on.

Thanks Dubhighland. I was lucky as I had a good spare wheel well on my first car (which is now the domor car). It was about the only bit on it that wasnt rotten.

Reading this thread i just realised how lucky i am, my 82 golf only has 1 patch of rust on the tailgate 8)

Might be worth starting this as another thread - I don't have any new cab rears at the mo or good used.

hi just wondering what your using to grind back the welds an angle grinder? if so what disc are you using?
