thanks for the encouragement mike…i know i'll get there in the end, BUT at the moment i'm finding the chase traumatic and i'm thirsty for the kill!

yes the car was in the shetland islands! (i'm in mancehster!)  :)

i guess i got a little desperate!

it does seem like i'm not going to get quite as much for my money as i first thought- if he did get 3500 for that one in the shetlands, MK1's are fetching silly money form what i can see?

thanks again-will keep you up-dated,

Rick.

Sellers market Schoey, these little cars are becoming harder to find nice clean ones and people are willing to pay more for them.

As someone said above, be patient and you will find one.  Please see the above example I posted - if viewed it will give you an idea of what 2k ish will buy.

There was a very nice black MK1 sold recently on this forum by a chap called kins - keep you eyes open and watch the marketplace.

It is however amazing when you start moving up into the 3.5k+ bracket how greatly improved the cars become might be worth considering a rethink on your budget.

Good luck.

Rick, the car wasnt worth ?3500 any day of the week.

Up in the Shetlands they are all brother and sister or cousins, so it doesnt count as real money.

Good luck with your search!

i spent ages looking for my Mk1

Ended up with a good deal on it too paid ?2000 if memory serves me correctly/

It did need some work but as im fully restoring the car anyway it wasnt a problem for me. I also got a few quid over ?1000 back in parts

As mentioend it might be worth looking at other options, buying a non runner and getting a recon engine, buying a half finished project needing minimal work.

thanks mike,

just to clarify….the most i've got to spend is ?4000

the original plan was to buy something that was finished ie:

-new paint (or VGC factory)

-engine conversion/recon engine

-some tastefull styling

-interior in good condition

I almost bought a car that ticked all theese boxes, got a hpi check and it turns out the car had been a write off. the owner didn't want to come down on price in light of the new information and someone else bought it for the asking price (?4000+) anyway?!!?

i offered kins ?2000 for his car (which was very nice) but unfortunatly he couldn't let it go straight away-said it was going on the bay then took a deposit before it went unde the hammer…anyone know how much it sold for?

then the shetland escapade! i can't belive that car fetched 3500!

GGGRRRR  :banghead:

i was under the inpression ti worked like this?:

enthusiast buys car in need of TLC, spend a fortune restoring/modifying it, shows it, gets bored, sells TO ME for fraction of what he(or she??!!) spent . moves on to next project.

where is the flaw in my plan?

Have you got a wanted add placed here on the forum?

I got offered some great campaigns at around the 4k mark. It appears 4k will buy you a restored and immacualte example. but I paid 4k for an unrestored and totally original/immaculate mk1 campaign in mars red with 68k miles.

All the cars i was offered came from the wanted add i placed here.

I was looking for about 6 months….

cheers manx…been following your search!

glad you got what you wanted in the end.

have placed a wanted add here and edition 38. had a few offers but not quite what i'm looking for. my search differs from yours in that i'm really looking for a car that has been modified.

i know i'l have to be patient but the search is starting to take over my life. for example- got to work  this morning at nine and here i am still on the forums at 11.30 having done no work!

suppose it's not all bad!

lol i think i was lucky as i was offered the one i bought months ago, had to fund some extra wedding stuff so had to postpone buying it. In that time a couple more came up but they were nothing compared to the beast i bought. Im so pleased the seller wasnt that keen to part with it!

Good luck & be patient…

i was checking these guys every week too.. They get quite a few mk1s in.

Yeah, they have been on there for a while though. I have contacted the guy and he seems keen to sell and even offered to do a valuation on the golf i bought.

Personally if i was after a mildly modified golf, i would want to buy a standard car and do the mods i want with the rest of the money left over.. unless it was a VR6 conversion or the like when it seems more cost effective to buy someone elses once they have put blood, sweat, more blood and a shit load of money into it!

club polo is a good place for advice on the reliability.

I've heard good things and also some bad tbh..

heard a lot of melted pistons, blown oil seals, all sorts.
A rebuild would set back about ?350 on the charger…
