Misfire and Lumpy Idle

Guys,

I posted a link sometime ago ragarding my 1800 campaign having a misfire when the engine was neither warm nor cold.

From cold she'll run fine, when the engine has been left to cool, say for an hour or so and I start her again the engine runs rough.

The car has been in to the garage on Tuesday, the whipped the injectors out and cleaned them and sorted the emissions too, the engine then seemed to run a lot smoother but the problem with the rough has reoccured.

Any ideas??

Really???

The garage tested them and said they were working fine??  Checked the spray pattern etc.

If it was injectors would I not get the problem all the time??

Cheers

Thats the ignition system like? Have you replaced bits? HT leads I'm thinking of…

To be honest no i've not!  The HT Leads look like new, the car is new to me, guess I should head in this direction?  I've replaced the dizzy cap, rotor arm so suppose i should complete the job.

As anyone used Magnecor leads, are they any better than standard ones??

Cheers

Jamie

I'd go to VW and get some Quantum ones. They may be a few more quid but they last for ages unlike GSF/ECP ones that only last about a year. They end up breaking down causing misfires and the rubber ends perish very quickly. I don't think upgrading leads is worth it.

It sounds like leaky injectors so they're on the right track. However, I doubt they cleaned them properly, apparently the only proper way to clean injectors is with the ultrasonic stuff. Also, did they test and observe the leaking injectors/spray pattern?

(What happens is, when the engine is cold, any leak has already leaked into the cylinders and seeped down into the oil, the system pressure has dropped off and there's no fuel in the cylinders to make it start/run rough. When its just been turned off, not enough time has elapsed for the leak to affect the startup).

Paul,

The garage said the injector for no.4 cylinders spray pattern was poor, they also said no.4 plug was very wet, so you'd think injector.

The lump idle can stay for about 5mins or so after starting from warm, would this still happen if it was the injector???  maybe its not vaporising the fuel properly??

Mine cleared in around 10-15 seconds. If the injector's spray pattern is poor, then it could persist I suppose.

Cheers Paul,

Will try some new HT leads and then look at the injectors if the problem persists!

I had a similar problem last week - really lumpy idle and rough running. turned it wasn't firing on all cylinders because I needed new sparkplug leads.  After fitting the new leads it still wasn't right.  I think one of the old leads had failed causing the spark plug to stop operating. As a result the sparkplug got very dirty, and would not spark with the new leads.  I cleaned the offending sparkplug and swapped it with another, and everything's running fine now.

Long shot but it might help.

Well, I have just tried ordering a set of leads from VW only to be told that they have now been discontinued, thankfully a local motor factor can get me some Bosch ones so they will hopefully be here tomorrow.

The car has new plugs fitted so hopefully this will sort it???

Just a quick update, the car has now started to misfire all the time very slightly whilst the rev's are low, will have to wait for the parts to arrive and keep those fingers crossed!!!

Hope it solves it matey

I cant believe they've stopped making them. Maybe the genuine ones have been stopped but I'm sure tey should have been able to supply Quantum ones. Anyway, the Bosch ones should be great!

If the leads are breaking down you might be able to see sparks arching if you take a look in the engine bay at night while the engine's running.

Ross,

My Bosch leads never transpired, they had ordered the wrong ones!  So I decided to order a set of Magnecor 8.5mm Leads (had these on my MX5 and really noticed a difference).  The only problem is they are mail order so having to put up with the misfire which is now constant when below about 2000rpm.

I have checked under the bonnet at night, cant see any sparks but get this is no guarantee that they are OK.

I'll wait patiently for the new ones to arrive!!!!!

Don't forget to give your existing sparkplugs a clean once you've put the new leads on!

lumpy running

i have a the same problem, lumpy idle, missfires under 2000 rpm, so i replaced the dizzy, rotor arm,ht leads ,plugs, air filter, as it was due a decent service anyways and i still got the same problem !!!! :o( . the last few days it been refusing to run when first started, keeps cutting out , but runs when warm (still lumpy tho) i suspect its  the cold start problem again , tho it did have another valve fitted 6 months ago , maybe the recent cold snap has found a weakness . ill keep replacing stuff till i find the problem and i'll let ya know what happens !!!!!!!
