Does anyone do motorsport in their MK1?

What class does she run in and what are you competing against?

MI-16 205's and Astra 16v's with Touring Car spec engines spring to mind…

I run in class A2 (scotland) which is road cars up to 1800cc.

I am up against Novas and Fiestas usually. One Nova in particular has a big bucks swindon built 8v and the other Nova is an 1600XE with SBD itb's and other bits taking the power to around 190bhp. The Fiestas tend to be 1800 zetecs on itbs and all are very well prepped, i.e. seamwelded, fully stripped and weld in cages.

Just wondered if anyone drives their Mk1 in anger?

I belong to a Motor Sports Association motor club and don't often see Veedubs on events. Loads of RS2000's, Corsas and Novas, etc but hardly any Golfs.

The kinds of events I'm talking about are Autotests and Solo Tests, Trials, Sprints, night scatters, 12 car rallies, were all that is required is membership to an MSA affiliated club and the correct third party insurance (for yourself - not the car), a tank of fuel and maybe a "Clubmans" license.

Hi there me and my son compete reularly on National B stage rallys in our 79 mk1 golf usually the only vw in the event pics can be seen on Poply - Create free online invitations - send with text & email or http://www.teltphotography.com/index.php?file=/2007/Rallying/Exeter+MC+Smeatharpe+Stages+Rally+20th+October+2007/Class+B/Car+60
Take a look guys and see what you think.
I have had this car for over 20 years so its not concours as it competes regularly and has suffered a few injuries.
Technically its a 1.6 scirroco carb engine now on twin 40 webbers using a standard early 4 speed gti box disc braked rear and adjustable coil overs all safety gear to meet msa regs for rallying.
Cheers,
Phil and Dan.

If you wanted to get into MotorSport, what's the best way to go about it if you haven't got any experience with track driving?

And what modifications, if any, would you need to do to the car in order to get it to "race" standard?

Definitely the easiest route is drag racing, its the cheapest and least (in fact, for RWYB, no) mods required. If you don't want to simply go in straight lines, I believe trialling is not too costly either - don't know details though.

I'd suggest if you want to do drag racing, try a couple of RWYB (Run What You Brung) days first, then if you're serious, look at the VWDRC website (VW Drag Racing Club).
