Sounds like a bit of a mini-project in its own right! How are you going to make the parts which swivel the car? Perhaps you could obtain an old pair of stub axles (rear) and brake drums and then brackets to bolt these to?

I wish I'd thought of something like this 3 weeks ago. I removed the fuel tank and rear axle, to do some welding in the wheelarch area, but I've in fact found and welded 8 small sections underneath the car, and that's just the right hand side! I made the error of only raising the car enough to take the axle and fuel tank off, so there is only space to lie underneath the car.

The frame/tilter in the linked thread bolts to the rear suspension mounts - something which might need to be cut away and replaced. Still, plenty of ideas here though…

What are you going to do with your old shell? Is the rest of it really too rotten to do anything with?

yea it really is far more rotten than i first thought, rear arches right the way past inners, floor pan front and rears, fuel filler aperture, inner wings, wing mount rails, engine bay bulk head, scuttle, rear number plate area, rear panel the list is endless.  :banghead:  have scrapped the chassis now so hopefully will have some "Quicker"progress with this one.

hey all   have had a busy few weekends working on the car and have managed to get the engine in place.

old unit out:

checking clearance for engine with mk1 GTI box in:

FSI going in

will start to fabricate the mounts for the engine and box. I will be using the mk3 16v box as there isnt enough clearance for the mk1 GTI box, the housing is longer than the mk3 box.

Any help will be appreciated, cheers Dips
