Racing a Mk1 in the VW Cup

Anyone raced in the VW Cup?

http://www.vw-cup.co.uk

We have bought solid shell with the intention of turing it into a true championship contender, perferably in the VW Cup.

We have the rules and regulations here to read through, and to build the car around, we know when, where, and how much it will cost. We know who are drivers are and who are pit crew are.

What we don't know is of anyone that has actually done it.

Has anyone out there done a season?
What are the highs and lows?
Would anyone like to sponsor us? We can sport the sponsors names proudly on every panel - 'www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk' etc etc.

What do you think?! - Let me know.

Cheers

Shonky

Only just spotted this thread.

I've done a season in stock hatch (750 Motor Club), but not the VW Cup. I am interested in it myself as a next step up.

If you're wanting to make your Mk1 a championship contender, be prepared to spend a lot of money! I've been told that the front runners have something like ?65k budgets 8O, running Mk4 R32s and the new Mk5 GTI! I'm not sure if there are classes in the VW cup, so I suppose you could make it a class contender. Also, being a manufacturer sponsored championship, preference is given to newer models. There are at least 2 or 3 Mk1s running I think, one of which is Claire Tippet: http://www.clairetippet.com/. Might be worth contacting her for advice.

You could always join me in Stock Hatch next year! :D

Good luck!

Cheers guys, just the inspiration that we were looking for!

Out budget is ok, but not ?65K!

I think that they may have changed the rules for new entrants anyway, regarding the age of the vehicles. I don't think they want the old MK1's embarrasing all the later models!

We have also looked into stock hatch, but we think thay maybe you can't tinker with your cars as much, hence 'stock'?

Thanks for the advice, Keith, I will be in touch if thats ok, once we get we get under way with building the car. I will also contact Claire Tippet to get her feedback.

When does the stock hatch season start btw?

Cheers

I'm sure the VW Cup has introduced a rule that your car must be less than 10 years old unless it has been raced in the series in previous years. Think this rules your MK1 out.

It's where the steering wheel should be…..

1978 1.6GTi LHD

1979 1.1N LHD

1981 1.5CL LHD

1981 1.6GTi LHD

1982 1.6GLi Cabrio

none of which are on the road !!!!

Hi Mate,

By all means get in touch. My email is keith@grone.co.uk.

Stock Hatch, as you have pointed out, is largely stock, but this keeps costs down which is never a bad thing. You could always try Hot Hatch, organised by the same club. You've got much more freedom to mod, plus most of the stock and hot hatch meetings co-incide, so we could help eachother out. The problem at the moment is that Mk1s are not very well represented in the 750MC, which is one of the main reasons I wanted to run one. The more of us there are, the more we can help and support eachother if something breaks.

I tell you something; the Mk1 has shown some respectable french tin cans a thing or two, and that's not even with it up to it's full competative state  ! It's over 25 years old for christ sake  ! I think that says something of the Mk1.

The season starts either 1st or 2nd of April at Brands Hatch. Two new circuits next year, being Castle Combe and Oulton Park. See http://www.750mc.co.uk…2006%20Fixture%20List.pdf for the full 750MC calendar.

All the best in whatever you decide!

I'll give you more than pics:

http://www.keith.grone.co.uk/MalloryTestDay.htm

This is a vid and some pics of the recent test I did of the new car at Mallory park. The car has been built by AW Tracksport and goes like an absolute gem! It's not as pleasing to the eye as my last car, but where it matters, it's better! It's got a long race history, hence the slightly battle scarred condition.

Yes I think you are right. Pretty annoying really!

Those are some interesting pics!

Did you roll it just the once? The car seemed to gradually disintegrate the further down the page I got!!!

Looks like fun though :)

By the way, was that a RUF BTR in the first couple of pics?

The roll resulted from a minor spin. I entered the gravel at the wrong angle and the momentum was just enough to flip the car on its roof. There was no damage. The following pics are just where the bonnet catch came loose and was blowing up in the wind.

Not sure of the spec on the Porsche, but it was being driven very gently as I overtook it 3 times!

I'll have some more in-car vids to post up of the day shortly. These should be a bit kinder on the neck  .

Btw, someone off here said they were going on this trackday. Whoever you are, did you go in the end? What car were you in?

i posted some pics from that day recently - that a mate took. didn't recognise you Keith because of the different car!

Don't think the autofarm 911 was a Ruf btw. Looked more like a 70's RSR. Although if Keith overtook it 3 times, its more likely an RSR 'look' SC. (No offense Keith  )

Just watched the video - fantastic to see the in car footage. really finding the limits at that right hander!! Nice hassling on the focus, forcing mistakes to get past. i'm v jealous

Wicked Pics!

How come I never saw that thread.

The white Porsche wasn't giving everything at all. It could have been a RUF. I imagine it's extremely unforgiving in the handling department, compared to say my Mk1, which lets you get away with murder. Although as you will discover when I post up some more vids shortly, I was nearly caught out on two occasions    .

Good call on the Porsche Greg… Not a BTR at all - had another look on Gran Turismo ;) I was confused by the similar lower front bumper… And in all fairness, if a Mk1 can beat it round a track, he probably wasn't trying!

Having said that, the Mk1 I've got on Gran Turismo is very handy around a twisty track

If you've got some spare sponsorship panels to donate?! I think it would be fantastic advertising for the club. :D

We could ask Claire too??

I don?t know who sorts out advertisement/sponsorship. :dontknow:

Walt's mate did the clubs banner and I know he does top graphics.

You could have a chat to Drew
