Put the old one back on. It may not be the cause of your problems as you are still getting them, plus it had different part numbers, so won't be helping things if it is different internally.

right then matey here's whats happening. i'm towing it to a mk1 - mk2 specialist on saturday and he's going to sort the problem as well as put a new mk1 gearbox on. i'll let you know how it goes on tuesday when i pick it back up.

dont want to appear to be giving up but its gone on too long and i'm doing 12 hour days at the minute so by the time i get home its too dark.

mind you if he tries to charge too much its comin straight back and i'll have to do it!

If you don't have the time to spend on the car, things like this can go on for ages. My recent problem took me 2 months to diagnose, purely because I now spend so much time with the wife and baby - Babies take a lot of looking after!
