Another Dad comment, well I am going to be one in January so I can.

If you don't declare those mods you are as good as uninsured.

If you have a crash and it's discovered you'll be in real trouble, imagine if you hurt someone, one of your passengers or someone in another car.

Personally I'd rather walk than drive around knowing that.

In my opinion, you are too young and have not been driving long enough to have a "Fast" car.
I really think that Limitations on Engine size etc should be brought in for young/new drivers…

I lost control of and crashed my 1 litre polo when I was 18. Totally sober designated driver with a car full of people. We all walked home that night.

My friend lost his life at the age of 18 driving his dads large and powerful Audi into a tree.

I'm only 25 but with over 6 years driving various cars from 1.1 to 3.5 V8

younger drivers should start off small!

my first car was a 1.1 Mk1 escort, yeah it was slower than anything on the road but it still looked great! and with today's speed traps and only needing 6 points in the first 2 years of driving to lose your license! I wouldn't buy anything big….

I don't necessarily agree with the high power new driver's thing.

Doesn't mater what car you are driving - Hit anyone at over 35 and you will most likely kill them.  Hit anything reasonable solid at over 50 and/or your passengers will probably die.

Engine power does have something to do with it but 1.1's scream down my residential road at 50+ as well as any 270bhp monster.

I hear where you are coming from Rich but from my personal experience I think power and control of that power is related to accidents.

Not just top speeds.

Yeah control of power will increase the risk of an accident for sure - buuuuut - there's a lot of 50 year old blokes killing themselves at the mo when they get on high powered bikes for the first time.

I think my point is that it not just the young'uns and it's not just about the power, although mix em up and  8O  8O

I think it's more a lack of knowledge on the handling and limits of that's being driven..

younger drivers wouldn't have experienced sliding, the back end stepping out.. winter driving especially! and they wouldn't really know the size of the car hence the 'more likely to be involved in a road accident'… not knowing when is too close to a kerb at 60mph, clipping it would mean goodbye car.

old'uns think because they've driven for decades, they can get in (or on) anything and be able to handle it without getting to know it first

but generally the more power there is, the more unpredictable it is when it makes a bid for freedom

in my view to get your driving license there should be something included to see what the driver would do if the car lost grip etc… a test including skid control and cornering would benefit driving abilities of younger drivers

I agree with some of the points raised by PhillTMK1GTI

The driving test bears little resembalance to actually driving on the road. I passed my test seven years ago and like many other drivers,  Icould control the car competently, but that was it.

Something needs to be done linking a new more indepth driving test, which is compulory, and related to your insurance premiums.

Perhaps engine size or bhp/tonne should be limited to younger drivers, or a limiter in the car?

Speed cameras are not the way forward. Education is the best policy.

Having had few accidents over the years, I think the thing that drivers especially the less experenced is that you can be going round a corner at what ever speed and next thing your on the roof, twice in my case once at 19 stupidty and 2 months ago my MG midgets disc broke when doing 35  then straight into the wall,,,see it not always your fault

The line between being in control and out of control is very fine.

Go on a rally driving course, it's amazing what you don't now about car control then drive home slowly.

Reading the statistics, 95% of accidents are down to driver error which is something to think about.

That makes you in the 5%.

For once it was a total un-avoidable accident, running in the new engine 430miles completed..allmost broke my heart..till i got out and thought I'm alive  

well i started small! this isnt my 1st car i had the words slowest seat ibiza 1.4cl before my golf.

i practised driving on the wet on purpose to see in my golf..

its only the age thing that ive seen before but never joined in with, ive seen this sort of post about limit on engine size, it depends on the person which you cannot judge ever, who would have the right to say who can have what?

if its on a long strait road and your causing no one harm…away from everything.

ive been driving for about 2 years anyway in that ibiza before i passed my test.

i think basically someone that is 35 doing the same as me people would admire.
that has got to be it, watching videos of rabbits beating supras etc, obivously got to be old.

Don't be down hearted I'm sure you will get cheeper insurance, started a livley debate aswell and you opinion is as usefull as the rest.

When I was 19 I was driving a 1967 MK1 Cooper S that was fully restored and did over 100mph. It was perfect But after 10 months of screaming around I rolled it and it was gone, got 6 points due care and attention and a ?90 fine. which doesn't sound that bad but I had a Meteo 1.0 and then a Panda 1.0 as that was all I could insure for the next 5 years…..

Just don't gamble and drive your dream longer  :wink:

Declare those mods! Otherwise you basically aren't insured
