maybe when the damper/shock was changed there wasn't enough oil in the suspension leg (they should have some oil in the suspension leg right??)… while I've got the car jacked up I'll see if I can get any play from there too.. good idea Cero :y:

they do need to be pressed on to the hub, and into the steering knuckle (right name?) - but that shouldn't be a massive problem.
the "chilled hub" trick is not going to be easy as the manual recommends keeping the suspension strut bolted to the hub - my freezer ain't that big…
However, I may stick the bearings in the oven to ease the fitting process.
I'll tackle it this coming weekend and let you know how it goes - good luck with the knocking.

PS - My Haynes manual (old one) reckons that if you're getting gearbox noise (could be a knocking) that matches wheel speed, it could be either the differential bearings or worn splines on the pinion shaft. If it's either of these, a second hand gearbox will probably work out cheaper than trying to replace them.
You might also want to check whether there are any bolts sticking out from the drive shaft where it connects to the gearbox - that might go knock knock only when moving.

You will NEVER live this down…..admitting to it on here too !!!
Brave man - many would have said 'It just went away' !!!!
Glad you found it though, before your wheel went up the road without you - hope you have not damaged the threads or the holes in the wheel.

Which one - admitted it, or not spotted it sooner?
Don't worry about it: at least it was easy and cheap to fix!
We've all been there - I remember my Mk1 starter was making a different noise than usual, for a few days, but I decided to look at it later on, at the weekend. When I did look, I found that one of the two bolts had fallen out completely, and the other was about halfway unscrewed ops: (No damage done, thank goodness)

My old man mentioned loose wheel nuts as a source of noise - ah the folly of yoof
I'll be checking mine this weekend - just in case - and smiling
you still wanna hear about changing wheel bearings?
I promise to fess up if the noise turns out to be operator incompetence related - probably

Christ 8O , I had loose nuts on a wheel last year and scared me stiff driving at more than 40mph for 2-3 miles it took to find somewhere safe to stop. Thought, a driveshaft or something was dying. Glad you got it sorted.

:lmao: I'll have to remember that one as I'm sure I'll need it in the future
If you could do a write up with pics on how you get on with the wheel bearing it would be very handy!
