Wheel Arch trim from VW

Phill (pete) - screw them on with stainless screws and washers.  Bung in plenty of waxoil. check for any cracks in the sealant and reseal as necesary.  Do this every 12 months or so and the arches will not rust.

Rinse the wheel arches well when you wash the car and get all the mud out.

Use grip fill and they will either fall off or never come off without damaging the paint imo.

Double sided trim tape is a good bet, is foam so has a small amount of thickness to it but is designed for this type of thing, and fairly easy to get off.
