new golf trouble fast idle and smoking!!!

crazyquiff said

The seal should be on the idle screw so no need to take off the manifold - should be 5 min job :temps fate:

 that's what I thought about the gear linkage… 3 hours later and still couldn't get the bolt in!  :banghead:

Moreno - It's simpler than that - the o-ring is actually on the screw so just take the crew out - take ring off - put now on - replace screw and adjust

wow that was a piece of cake! only took 5 minutes!
another question about the smoking:
would the rocker cover breather filter jobbie make the engine use/burn oil or just make it smoke?

It used just over 1 LITRE of oil in 6 days (about 150 miles)

I got the car for cheap because of a suspect head gasket but that wouldnt cause the smoking would it?
It does it a very little bit while ticking over but a big puff every time under acceleration???

Sounds like the rings have gone.... This causes smoke on acceleration.

is it much of a job to do if the head is already off being skimmed?
how long / much do you reckon ill be looking at for that then?
didnt think it was the valve seals cause they usually only smoke when starting.

Is the engine still in the car? If so you'll need to lift it on a ramp.
You need to get the sump off and undo the conrod nuts to get the end caps off. The pistons will then push through the block and come out of the top.

GSF list a piston Ring set:
16546   PISTON RING SET-81mm    G1 1.8 GTi 8/82>    ?36.00

If you want to do it yourself - not bad, though with Labour costs, could be about ?100.
(You will need a ring compressor to get the pistons back into the cylinders though…)

It's not something for a novice to be honest…
I've only ever done it under the supervision of a VW trained Mechanic in the past!
The 16v engine I'm doing at the moment is in my garage and is my first non supervised engine strip! Will still need advise for the torque settings to put it all back together again though!
