Wave!

I bet the size of a small country. Does the closest guess win a dash vent kit Rich?

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

Plus on the new Mk5 GTI they put the GTI badge on the wrong side of the grill.

I think they have lost the plot - the Mk4 Polo is the same size as the Mk1 Golf…

We're just so faithful to the old Golf we hate to see it change so much!    That photo of a mk1 next to a mk5 in the picture gallery says it all! Does anyone know what the mk5 weighs? The 800 odd kgs of the entire mk1 is probably just the weight of it's arse end!  :dontknow:

It's probably got 800Kgs of Plastic on it!

the only thing 'original' is the red trim around half the grille!

still think they should reproduce the originals (Mk1 Golf, Mk1 Ford Escort etc.etc.) with a modern engine and electrics, never gonna happen though!

To quote a robin williams film (ish) the shadow of a mk5's rear end would weigh 800kgs. Hadent even noticed the badge was on the wrong side . I just think its a shame that you can almost see the evolution from 1 to 4 and then blam a Civic / 306 wanna be . Anyway just about the most interesting thing anyone has to say is the fact that the lights have tiny vws in them that act like batman logos , dosent say much for the car and that it returns to the MK1 concept , VW should never have left it !.

I agree, there'd be a stampede! Those lucky so & so's in South Africa get brand new mk1's with all modern interior & mod cons, but the with the unchanged mk1 body!  :y:  I'd love one of those!   Wonder what kind of nightmare it would be to own/insure an imported car (and get the thing shipped over!)? Right hand drive though…I've got the brochure and everything!  :read:

The SA mk1's are 1600cc (Dropped the 1800cc a few years ago) not that thats a major concern as they always felt quicker anyway . You would be better off buying a second hand car as this reduces your import duties and the easiest way is to go to SA yourself buy the car and arrange a container to transport it back , my old splitty was brought in this way . Finding someone else who wants one is a good tip as a container can take two cars this halves your costs . I think you would be looking at around 750 for a container and then you would need to register it etc . But the end result , a sweet nearly new mk 1 golf. My brother brought his hot rod in from the U S a few years ago and it cost him ?1500 in total .

Thanks for the info geezer!  :D  Not as bad as I thought for shipping etc, but I'd still need a lottery win to afford the car aswell! (Even if it's a lot cheaper than UK) The brochure I have doesn't have any prices in for brand new, so I wouldn't know what a 2nd hand one would be - although that's obviously the best option. The 1.6i (74bhp) seems to have impressive stats & all the extras (double exhaust, alloys, cd player, immobiliser, lowered suspension) We can but dream…any suggestions for those winning lottery numbers?  :(

Imagine a GTI with a turbo on aswell…I wouldn't know what'd hit me! Should my engine ever die before the bodywork, I'll wack a 1.9 turbo diesel in, but that's as good as I'll get with mine! Would probably kick arse though for a diesel considering the weight of the mk1s! I'm getting a balljoint replaced on my Golf today so I've borrowed a Peugeot 205 1.9 turbo diesel, and I must admit it's a bit of a pocket rocket, with the impressive mpg to boot. Now where's that shoehorn…

Goin back to the wave if you see a mk1 post i've had mixed returns. Seen a smart mk1 in Dudley who give me the head nod on wed but I waved at a J reg pick up this mornin and he totally blanked me out. I'm sure (100%) that all caddy drivers are not like that coz we have a good un on here but it makes you feel a bit silly  when you get a negative response of someone.

mk1 silver campaign totally standard lowered on coilovers magic tree vanilla

Just had a full outer body restore

There's nothing worse than that 'do I know them???' look from someone you're waving at!
Annoyingly enough (as mk1's are extremely rare out here) I saw a black GTI on the A170 out of Scarborough (perhaps going all the way to York?) but I wasn't in my Golf so couldn't exactly wave!    Never seen it before! Tourists eh!
Was it anyone on here? Very nice lookin Golf!
