Specialist Tools

Looking at various threads it would seem that if the club had access to "Specialist Tools" it might be a good idea to setup a tool loan service.

Anyone got any thoughts :?:

Whilst i can see that it would be handy im not sure i would want to go lending my specialist stuff out to people i have never met, i meen no offence by saying this and hopefully others can understand what i meen

I was thinking the tools could be owned by the club and hired to members for a small fee and a deposit. A case in point is the K-Jetronic pressure gauge kit (VW 1318), that could help with solving/eliminating starting/running problems.

And who would pay for the tools to start off with?

Maybe they could be purchased using club subscription money :?:

I think its a good idea in theory, but as I mentioned in my other post I think the practicalities would make it difficult to actually implement.

How do members get access to the tools if we all live in different parts of the country for example? I know smaller tools could be posted, but many of the more specialist tools would be a bit on the heavy side.

There would also be issues with club liability I would guess if someone was injured using one of the tools for example…..

I think the best bet is to try and encourage people who live close to each other to meet up occasionally. Often in this way you find out someone has a tool they are willing to let you borrow, or even better help you out themselves.

Personally I think any spare club funds should be put towards things like the remanufacture of obsolete parts, organising events and maintaining a kind of knowledgebase on the Mk1, including books, publications, technical info, press info etc.

I don't know if its possible to get hold of them but copies of the original VW workshop manual for example would be worth persuing…..

On the subject of the fuel pressure gauge tool - see my post in Crazyquiff's thread on the Bosch K-Jet specific one availalable from the States. I suspect this will do all the VW tool does and is only about 30 quid plus shipping. I plan to order one next week - will put a post up on the forum with details once it arrives.

Agreed, making obsolete parts is a great idea as well, copies of the vw manuals are available as i have a few now myself, very useful but dont get carried away on ebay as most are available as pdf on the net

As I said - I think its a good idea, and I'm the last person who wants to discourage new ideas so keep'em coming  :D

In fact, it was this thread that made me think of another idea along similar lines (although I guess with similar practical problems).

I am still wrestling with diagnosing my fuelling problem, and unfortunately until I get a fuel pressure testing gauge the only way to diagnose is by part replacement (expensive where the fuel system is concerned).

I was just thinking with new warm up regs, fuel metering heads and air metering heads running into the hundreds of pounds, maybe there could be some way of maintaining a "bank" of known good expensive parts like this that could be used for diagnostic purposes by members?

That way you could hopefully swap out suspect parts without spending a fortune until you identify the suspect part. You could then return the "bank" parts used for testing and you only have to then buy a replacement known defective part.

I know this would be a logistical nightmare in a similar way to the tool idea, but thought I would throw it into the "pot" of ideas, in case it triggered any other ideas from other people  :D

I'd be interested in knowing what the cost of the Fuel pressure gauge tool is out of interest?

I think the tool number is: VW1318.

Probably horrendously expensive, but I may as well know just out of interest!!!!

Storm, i work in a vw dealer so the tools will be vw supplied. Not sure how their prices compare but there a lot of tools that you would only get from vw i would imagine

I used a tool 3047A to remove my valve stem seals, was like a slide hammer thing that attached onto the seal, worked perfectly
