Electric windows
New here, but I thought I d see if anyone knows of a simple el.window conversion?
I believe that the mk1 could be equiped with power windows (at least the cabrio?) but the scrap yards (here in sweden) does nt seem to have heaps of them .
So a simple way to fit pw with parts that are easily available would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, the only way to make the windows electric is to use a (non-VAG) window conversion kit, but I doubt that anyone is still making them after all these years.
I described a way to convert your existing manual window mechanisms in the old forums (I'll look for it in a moment), but you'd need motor units which work on a similar "flexible rod" design window-winder mechanism.
Note that the window winding mechanism in the Golf Cabriolet doors (both manual and electric) is entirely different than the ones in the doors with window-frames. You might be able to get the Cabriolet mechanism to fit into a framed door, but it would probably not be easy.

I know of one scrap yard that has vw electric window kit on a Scala, will they fit a MK1?

Not sure about the Scirocco, but you could take a measuring tape to the scrappy and measure between the fixing points of the mechanism and compare it to your Golf one. (measure between the bottom bolt/rivet, and the two bolts beside where the winding handle would be)
I found the link to the old forum post (see below)
Note that it assumes that you already have a motor drive unit on a (worn-out) non-VAG mechanism, but the procedure should be much the same, after you have successfully found a similar motor on a (non-Golf) scrap car.

That was a good link Type 17, I stripped part of the window kit but left it because the height of the Scala door looks a lot lower, but thinking about it why should it matter? The sleeve on the window can be moved and the horizontal bar could be modified, also the blanks were an indentical colour shade and looked factory fitted may strip out the kit next week.

If you have a Golf mechanism to hand, bring it with you to measure up against.
Note that the window mechanism is different on the front doors of 5-door Golfs (just in case you were going to measure off one of those…)

If donor parts don't work out for you, you can buy excellent Aftermarket kits here in the UK with OE type switchgear. Check out this link
http://www.pca1.co.uk/…product_profile/index.htm
Electric Life / Poole Clayton are the best know supplier here in UK.
You need kit no. VK03 9904, pricey though at ?236!
Cheers

The Scala was a 3 door, let you know how I get on. Must wait for the engine to be repaired first. :?

Hey storm81, while I've got your attention can you tell me if anyone has got that 3 spoke steering wheel for sale on the link you gave me in the SS site, the picture on the link shows a rare 3 spoke with a series of holes in the spoke, did you spot it?
