So the melted bit is stopping the contacts from flipping over.

Can you not dig the melted plastic out so the contact arm is free?

I’d also consider why this has melted.
Could it be a dry joint that’s intermediary  contact on off so caused arcing?

Feel free to pop over and I’ll fire the soldering iron up

Cold Solder joints are quite common to VW, I can think of many a CIS user over here that has run into the Fuel Pump relay stops working, then 20 minutes later it works.  Most carry a spare or the Jumper cable… :). Kind of like me with an extra glow plug and GP fuse when I was rocking a MK1 diesel for 20 years.

A cold solder joint can cause a component to over heat, the heat causes connectivity issues that when it cools off it can reconnect.

Trust me, this cold solder speil isn't my first rodeo with wonky circuitry…. Been playing with Electronics since about 1971, and cars before that.

And being Male don't mean a thing, now blonds are another matter as I have 4 blondes in my life and some days I would rather be hit in the head with a wrecking ball. One of them is a Male.   :PElectrics are logical, and have defined rules.  Blonde's not so much.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.
