First of all Happy new year,
 Don't know if you remember but I spoke to you about your wheels a while ago.
Well I am still leaning towards 17" and I came across a post of a blue tin top on 17's I think belonged to you, I was just wondering if I could pick your brains a bit about the pitfalls of fitting 17's, i.e. tyre sizes , offset and such.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To be fair the wheels were on the car when I bought it, so I don't really know what the offsets were etc, and I cant remember the tyre size …. Zooming in on a photo I have though they are 185/35 17's  

I think the arches were rolled on mine, and even with good suspension its going to be a hard ride! 17's, 35 side wall profile and limited travel on suspension so they don't rub means not a great ride.

That said, it was stiff but bearable. I would suggest if you definitely want to run 17's, maybe coltech raised top mounts might give you more room for suspension travel … ?

The majority see 17's as too big for a Mk1, but certain wheel styles work. I really liked them on it, thought they suited the car and looked well.

The new owner has sold them now though and its on 16's I think

Hey thanks for getting back to me really appreciate it,
have had a look at your old thread and its confirming my thoughts that 17's can look really good if done correctly. I've bought some Lenso 17" with offset of 20 with 195/40/17 tyres but they were just wrong so sold a pair and now buying 2 more with a 35 offset  (they will go on the back )  the wheels are 7.5 j so again a voyage of discovery but worth the work I think.
The front will stay with offset of 20 but run the 185/35/17 tyres or they rub on the shocks I'm going to get some drive shafts shortened and the wish bones and rest I can do at work.
Ive also made some adjustable camber plates and raised top mounts out of stainless ( seemed like a good idea at the time ) so hopefully one way or another it should all come together.
Anyway thanks again and when I get something mocked up I'll ping you. over some pics.

So little update on the cabby 


 Had it ceramic coated by local detailer and really happy with how it came out 

 Fifteen 52's fitted 

 GTI stripe added which I think looks great and works with wheels ..?


 Rear lights , I have tried some all red rears but not sure on them . Want the FIFFT versions realy but they are £'s

Needs to go lower but can't at mo as1.8t sump sits too low 👎

And it made Ultimate Dubs to kick off this years show season

I might have to hit you up with one of my custom front splitters Rich. It'll help make the front look lower without causing any issues

Hello Rich, it’s all coming together nicely I’m not far off MOTing mine so I can take it to work and cut off those scaffolding bars that run along the sills, think I’ve got a way to go before I catch up to you though mate, I think the wheels look awesome and can’t wait to see it bagged.
Thanks again for the heads up on the tyre size of your tin top on the 17’s, has been a real help.
