Mk1f4ns Lhasa green project

Post

Hi all

ok so I've owned quite a few VWs in my time including, 2x corrados, 2x mk2 Golf GTIs, a Polo GTI, a Beetle turbo (don't ask) and three other mk1 Golf GTIs, I've been wanting another Mk1 for quite sometime but due to prices increasing and me having a lack of time due to work, I had almost given up on getting another one. Then I was told about a golf that was sat in a lock up for the last 8 years so I thought I'll go to check it out but thought that it will just be another mk2 driver or something, well to my surprise it was a mk1 golf gti in Lhasa green, to cut a long story short a deal was done and I snapped her up.

ive had her for 3 weeks now but I'm putting in quite a bit of time on her in the evenings and weekends so will hopefully be done in a couple of months, famous last words I know ha ha, well the plan is to keep her pretty much original but with a couple of small extras such as wheels, coilovers and exhaust, it will be getting a full respray and everything refurbished, anyway thought I would share my progress and get your opinions on how and what to do to her, pictures are below of how I got her and what has been done so far cheers

below is the day I got her, previous owner (only been two) had removed wings as they had some surface rust on the bottom edges apparently argh

So with most of the interior done I decided to move onto the floor areas, wasn't really any rust but thought I would have a good look so went right down to metal

Gave it all a good coat of dinitrol rust converter, wasn't really any there but thought I might as well, then etch primer and some high build primer to smooth out, gave it a quick coat of paint just for protection until she goes in to be painted

Rear bench was looking a bit ropey and I had a big roll of parcel shelf material so decided to retrim the back of it, I also painted the little horizontal bars, it does look good against the parcel shelf as material is very similar, I then decided to try it on the spare rear boot trims I had, now thinking about doing a skinny false floor and carpeting that so all matches

Looks like you're doing a really good job there, I want to do the same as what you've done to my interior!

Look forward to seeing more progress.

Thanks mikebot83, I'll get some photos up of the floor when finished, just got some slim MDF from b and q and used the original boot mat as a template to cur out and I will be covering in the same material, hopefully will look ok and will get rid of the boot spare wheel sag as well, I am also in the process of now smoothing the inside of the boot, I'm having a smoothed tailgate so have removed the expansion tank and bracket and smoothed the area on both sides
