£12,000 Sportline... I mean really?..

Just been having a rummage through ebay and typed in my usual searches, you know, we all do it don't we .. Golf ravage, golf sportline, golf mk1 nos etc etc etc.. Anyhow, a red J reg sportline has turned up and they are asking for £12,000 for it!.. I mean really!?.. Its in ok condition, fogged up front lights, terrible number plates (rear one not even fitted straight or in the right position) 89 thousand miles and one previous owner I think.. But seriously, have the sportlines really gone shooting up in value that much over the last year or so?.. For me, this is a £5,000 car at best. But what do I know, I've not been watching them that closely this year. I'm still not sure what would be worth more, an equivalent rivage or a sportline, but as time goes by, the sportline interior is lasting so well, that I reluctantly have to say that this may be a factor in future prices as I think there will be more sportlines that look good overall, rather than just on the outside. When new, the rivage leather was a fair opponent for the sportline recaro interior, but time has taken its toll on the majority of leather interiors leaving the sportline interior still looking fresh in comparison.. So… £12,000.. Is it worth it?.. Is it worth anywhere near that price?.. If the very last one registered couldn't get £12,000 then for me, this one doesn't have a hope in hell of getting half that.. What do the rest of you think?..

Not on here much anymore but I did notice this on ebay.
My very good condition Sportline with 97k sold for £7000 this year in standard guise with all the upgraded bits removed which I sold for a further £1500.
I think I got a good price for a good car.
The guy that bought it would have paid more as he told me so but in my opinion the car was fairly priced and the money was in my hand within 12hrs of putting the ad on my mk1 Facebook page, which in my eyes tells me the price was correct.
£12000 is stupid even for the best Sportline in the world.

I think the best one in the world would be worth every penny of £12,000.. Even more perhaps.. But for one barely above average, surely its got to be more like £5000 at best. There aren't even pics of the engine which makes me think that its not the best ever under the bonnet. It needs a couple of hundred pounds worth of badges and either cleaned or new lights and new number plates before I would even go to £5,000 personally..
Massbad69, I saw yours at the agm I think and it was priced right in my opinion, yours being one of the best out there..

The number plates look to be the original dealer plates to me. The font is the old style charles wright font that was in use at the time.

Well if that's the case, that would explain why they were fastened on wonky and in the wrong position. I've not met a dealer yet who could stick number plates on straight. My dad just bought a brand new skoda Fabia and I had them put the plates on straight before we would pay for it.. It really niggles me that people just don't take care with things like that!..

It's back on the bay - item 401115352286! Still 12k starting bid! I know I got a bit of a bargain with mine and I accept the mileage of mine is quite a bit more - but I can honestly say it ain't £9000 less of a car than that example.

I saw this pop up to and had a bit of a double take - if it had very low mileage and was extremely tidy but it doesn't really look it.
Not surprised they didn't sell at that price before and will be amazed if they do this time!

Nice price! I was offered €9000 for my Sportline here in Spain last year! 😎😎😎 Plus I think I already have a buyer for the Young Line LHD I am sorting in the uk at the moment but destined for Spain!

Yours is a particularly nice example though lol!! Don't get me wrong but it wouldn't sell mine for under 10k now. It's not worth 10k by any stretch but it's the kind of 'not for sale' price I'd have if in order to make it worthwhile and budget to find a replacement.
I suppose it might be an early indication of where the certain cabbies are going in light of the sharp rise in tin top prices or other 80s/90s stuff for that matter.

Okay I don't have a Sportline but mine is a bit special in other ways.
But when people ask me which they do would I consider selling it, I just throw a stupid number at them to put the off.
But one day I'm sure someone will take the bait and I'll sell him.
Then pocket half the cash and find something else!
Just can't get the car salesman out of me.
