What would you pay for this original 1.6 GTI with 16k miles?

Post

Hello all, first post here.

Sorry to be so abrupt but I am wondering what you would pay/how much is this worth for an original 1981 1.6 Golf GTI with only 16000 miles on the clock. There is no rust and has been off the road since 2008. It probably needs £1k being spent to recommission it. It starts but runs rough, obviously 7 year old fuel and oil is no good.

I am asking as I am in a situation. I want to buy this car but the owner isn't keen on selling it. It's actually with me in my storage and I'm trying to prise it off him. I'm thinking £8k? I've fallen in love with this car and I don't know where the cut off point should be.

Any service history and what else do you know about it?

From what I see which is almost nothing.
If the rest of the car looks like that one main picture inside and out and the grand on top at least to come.

If I could take it away for 8k I'd have his arm off.
Maybe even have his children.

But I'm looking at what it might be worth many years down the road with that one and not to turn a quick profit!

Service history is limited I think. Back seats are like new and the front seat has minimal wear as you'd expect. Overall interior is extremely good. Rear wheels still have the original tyres fitted and there's an unused spare in the boot. There is a bit of mould though on the rubber but it wipes off and the rubber surrounds haven't perished. Still has boot sticker (spare wheel and clear glass factory codes) and no rust anywhere- just a true original example. It's got dealer fitted Wolfsburg mudflaps too. Bodywork has light scratches but no dents, it would machine polish up nicely. I'm not here to make profit, I want this baby :)

Well I'm sure when news gets around on this forum you'll have a boat load of opinions.  ;)

Now you're the only one with eyes on.
I'm assuming you have a good deal of knowledge about the Golf Mk1's and GTI's!

Just to tell you I'm ex trade and used to sell them but where I live and with the prices I'll never afford one.

So assuming (yes it's dangerous)  you can 100% prove the mileage?

Going by what you have said I'd even go to 10k!
But be careful even if you have money to burn,  don't let your heart or your love and emotions colour your judgement mate.

That's my advice for what it's worth!

I have no idea what its worth, but have been watching advertised golf prices (as I wanted to buy one) for a while. Obviously I have no idea if the advertised price is actually achieved but going by that and only a photo I think £8 k may be a little short.

I also read on here recently that you can pay a few quid to the DVLC and I think get photo copies of all the old MOT's.

Or something like that!

I had no interest in Golfs or even VW's until a week ago. I've literally spent the last week doing all the research I can due to this car that has come into my storage. I'm a car enthusiast and can appreciate a good car. I actually own a mint 1999 Impreza 2000 as my weekend car which I would sell in an instant if I can strike a deal and get the guy to sell me this Golf.

8K is way too cheap for such a rare car. You can't restore or repair low mileage. They are only original once.

You may have a rare opportunity there if no one else knows about it so don't waste it by under valuing it and potentially upsetting the owner.

IMO his car is £12 k all day long mate as Yomp says dont undervalue the car and end up with the owner thinking your pulling a fast one on him . Cars like this with the milage and condition rarely come up for sale , plus this guy knows what he has thus the reason he isnt keen on selling it . Tread carefully ask him for first refusal if he does ever intend selling rather than trying to make him sell it . If some of the crazy classic dealers had this it id be £15+ k . Good luck with the challenge anyway …

91Jreg Sportline (now gone) For now 88 Ereg Mk2 16v (monza blue ) (now its gone too)Numerous mk1 tintops I  should never have sold 😰  Oh and a TDI  Touran as a daily ….latest toy mk5 Gti (showing my age) had to go serious money pit ,now cruising a Caddy Van

True but I think only once it's had a couple thousand spent on it to get it nice. It's been neglected for the best part of 15 years but it starts on the key, albeit rough. The exhaust has been replaced and it makes such a nice raspy sound with a few pops and bangs.

I had another look over it this morning. I did see a small bit of rust- both corners near the front splitter where the front wings meet just on the edge slightly. Nothing too concerning I don't think. Also a tiny bit along the drivers door edge where it's been accidentally banged upon opening. Also, it doesn't have a passenger wing mirror and there's a black plastic blank in its place. Was a passenger wing mirror optional? I read that an adjustable one from the inside was optional but was the whole mirror optional? Also I think the ariel on the wing has broken off. The base is still there but no stalk. The blaupunkt stereo turns on though but it won't tune into anything.

I don't see the guy till months on end so I need to wait until I next catch him to see if he will let it go. He's got some other classics but they're all 1920's stuff. I just love an iconic hot hatch.

It's crying out for a full service and a tip top professional clean and detailing!

Don't forget the rust you see is only one third of the problem normally.

The only thing I have spotted in the pic, is it looks like in one picture the drivers seat is different then in the others?

Is that because he sourced a new drivers seats and if so on that mileage the drivers seat bolster should not have worn that bad ?

If there is some old MOT's to back up genuine mileage etc this is a rare find.

I was looking for a tin top 2 months or so ago, and would do anything to have the opportunity to have a car with such low mileage and original.

If it has decent paperwork to back it up this could be a very valuable appreciating classic moving forward

If he is not too keen to sell, rather than bidding him, and risking offending him, ask him what he is looking for it and go from there.

To give you an idea of how well it could clean up, look at this - :-)

The drivers seat has had a cover on and in one of the pictures I took the cover off to take a picture to show the condition. There's light mildew/mould of some sort on the leather side of the seats but it wipes off with a lick of my finger. No doubt if treated to leather cleaner and conditioner it would come up well.  I bet all seats with a deep clean would come up beautifully.

I've looked through that thread and yes, stunning to say the least :)

It doesn't look as clean since the initial picture, it looks pretty unloved but most of the stuff you've highlighted is pretty minor. the front wings just need splitting from the front valance to repair in the seam.

Most of it looks like it is just cleaning and for those of us with car disease, we actually enjoy that sort of thing!
