if you can I would strip the whole wiring loom out then polo, if nothign else it will be a good source for genuine VW wiring which coudl be handy for you.

but main thing you need is the diagnostics port, take it with as much length as you can get.

also if your mk1 isnt a GTI then you could pull all the fuel pump loom out the polo and change the ends to suit
