They are called "clippers" as they were the base model for the Cabriolets, being carbed. IIRC till 92-93 ish, when you could opt for a 95 bhp CAT injected engine. The "Clipper" is a different range to the Cabriolet GTI. The "Clipper Kit" is a misnomer. It's actually called the facelift model to coincide with the MK2 tin top production. It wasn't worth VW spending any more money on developing a MK2 Cabby. Hence in 88 onwards all cabbies wether carbed clipper or GTI were sold with the Face lift. VW's next cabbie was the MK3.
