Hello from Tasmania, Australia!

Post

Hello my name is Erica and I live in Hobart, Tasmania.

I have always enjoyed Golfs especially Mk1s!  I currently own a 1976 2dr swallowtail LS (1.6L) and a 2001 MK4 GTI.  I have owned a few mk1s in the past – some have been driveable – others just for parts!

Anyway, I joined up to this forum as it has come up a lot when doing google searches etc and I have found it to have some helpful topics.

Lastly, here are some pictures of my two current Golfs and the white mk1 is my first car I ever had!  The best first car anyone could have I reckon!

Current 76 (rear has been lowered some more since this picture!)

Tell us a little about yourself and a whole lot about the MK1 you've got now.

Please feel free to post more pictures of it as well!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Well, about me, I am not a very interesting person lol.  I am 22, I work in one of my dad's businesses as a laser cutter.  Wouldn't give that job up for anything - coolest job!  Obviously I enjoy golfs and I also love music - being a player of piano and saxophone and a few other instruments.

Next, about my 76 Mk1…
I purchased it about a year ago, my brother owned it about 4 years ago and gave it a full respray then.  He sold it and I couldnt bear to see it sitting in the owners yard doing nothing so offered to buy it off them.  Bought it for nearly half the price they bought it off my brother :D This is what it looked like then:
Had the 13x8" superlites on the rear, 13x6 on the front, note Passat TS steering wheel - was still on it when I bought it!

Got some custom plates
http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/9274/img2013051400454.jpg
Then it got defected for being too low and wheels outside the guards (laws here are meant to be 100mm minimum from the lowest point on the car to the road and no wheel outside the guards)  So it had to go for a full roadworthy inspection which meant everything had to work - heaters, windscreen washers, lights working correctly, no coilovers - had to be orig suspension…you get it…

It passed :):) So stupid me put the coilovers and superlites back on…as well as a 2"resonated  exhaust and extractors and a 32/36 Weber DGAV - sounds great now!  But it got defected again so I cleared it again and bought some new wheels!!  Aluline Turbines :)

Then I picked up these Audi leather seats which were already welded to mk1 seat rails

And a wolfsburg steering wheel

Well…thats about it - it has its usual mk1 problems - like they all do ;)and it is so much fun to drive.  Best thing is, I can fix almost anything that goes wrong with it!!!! (Apart from the hard things ;))

And this is our hoist

And I have also realised that I dont have any good pictures of it so I will have to get it out for a little photoshoot I think.

Erica,

What's the supply of MK1 parts like in Australia?

I mean I live in Austria and it's hard enough to find parts here. Most of mine I get from Germany and England!

Its pretty good actually - although if I want new stuff like boots, bushes and other small things, I go straight to ebay uk.  Easier and quicker!

Second hand parts are easy to find though…I have wrecked 3 golfs myself for parts - cheaper to buy a whole car and sell off the other bits!

Vwwatercooled.com.au is our local forum which I buy a lot of stuff off there.

Wow, your far better off than I am.
I've not found a single used parts supplier in Austria.
There's really only one new parts specialist and they tend to cost more than what I pay on ebay posted for the same item!  O_o

Good business opportunity then??
There is 1 local new parts supplier here who apparantly are not stocking mk1 stuff anymore.  My mechanic probably has the next biggest range (which is about 1 or 2 shelves of stuff!)
But used parts are great!  Cheaper and all original stuff so better quality :)

I think there is a mk1 facebook group for Tasmania but that's it for our state.

Other states have their own clubs though I believe…mainland Australia is more into the clubs/groups thing than we are in Tasmania.

Haha what does an ambassador have to do?
No problems - you can use the pictures.
Photoshoot will come when I have painted the swallowtail bonnet I am waiting for my friend to get out of his storage!

Well I hadn't really thought that far haha.

If you'd like to get involved in the club though, we do regional meets in the UK, where a region is kinda like what you'd call a state, but much much smaller. We have regional hosts, who do things like setting up monthly meets (MK1 specific) and arrange convoys to shows together, things like that!

I do it for London and I used to do one in the midlands a while back, it's good fun!

I would love to organise a vwgolfmk1 meet/cruise/convoy here but tbh there is not enough interest in Tas.  We tried organising one about 6 months ago and 4 (!) people turned up - 2 of which were mk1s.  Great times were had by all but just not enough ppl to make it a regular thing.
However, I will promote the site whenever I can!

Ah that's a shame really, are there many Mk1's left in Australia, how do they do over their with the weather etc do they rot?

Thanks for promoting the site!
